USHL Rookie of the Year & All-Rookie Teams Announced

The United States Hockey League announced today that Youngstown Phantoms forward Cam Morrison has been named the 2016 USHL Rookie of the Year as determined by a vote of League general managers. Team USA abstained from nominations and final voting this season.

Morrison played in all 60 of Youngstown's games this season, scoring an impressive 34 goals and 32 assists in that span, both of which led the team. He finished tied for second in the league in scoring with Cedar Rapids forward Ross Colton. Morrison's 34 goals and 66 points led all rookies, while his 32 assists ranked third among first-year players. Those 34 goals are also the most by a rookie since Brock Boeser scored 35 last season for the Waterloo Black Hawks.

The Aurora, ON native was named USHL Forward of the Week on both November 2nd and April 11th. He was also named to January's USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Omaha, NE where he scored a goal to help Team East to a 6-2 victory.

Morrison was selected in the fourth round (51st overall) by the Phantoms in the 2015 USHL Phase II Draft. Prior to joining the USHL, he played for the York Simcoe Express program as well as the Aurora Tigers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. He is ranked 46th among North American skaters on the NHL Central Scouting List most recent rankings, and is eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft. He is committed to play college hockey at the University of Notre Dame following his USHL career.

Morrison is the first Phantoms player to win USHL Rookie of the Year since the franchise joined the USHL prior to the 2009-10 season.

USHL ALL-ROOKIE TEAMS

The United States Hockey League today announced the players named to the 2015-16 USHL All-Rookie Teams as determined by a vote of League general managers. Team USA abstained from nominations and final voting this season. The USHL All-Rookie Teams recognize the top players who were born after September 15, 1997, with less than 10 games USHL experience in any prior season.

The USHL All-Rookie First Team consists of forwards Cam Morrison (Youngstown Phantoms), Collin Adams (Muskegon Lumberjacks) and Eeli Tolvanen (Sioux City Musketeers), defensemen Jacob Bryson (Omaha Lancers) and Andrew Peeke (Green Bay Gamblers), and goaltender Ryan Edquist (Madison Capitols).

Those selected to the USHL All-Rookie Second Team include forwards Brannon McManus (Omaha Lancers), Matt Filipe (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) and Shane Bowers (Waterloo Black Hawks), defensemen Luke McInnis (Youngstown Phantoms) and Mikey Anderson (Waterloo Black Hawks), and goaltender Dayton Rasmussen.

USHL All-Rookie First Team

Cam Morrison (F), Youngstown Phantoms

The 2015-16 USHL Rookie of the Year finished the season with 66 points (34 G, 32 A), which led all first-year players .His 34 goals also led all rookies and was third among all USHL players. Morrison's 34 goals were the most goals scored by a USHL rookie since Brock Boeser's 35 goals last season. Morrison's 32 assists ranked third among all rookies this season. Collin Adams (F), Muskegon Lumberjacks

Adams had a phenomenal rookie campaign, as the Lumberjacks forward finished the year with 61 points (27 G, 34 A), good for sixth among all USHL players. Those 61 points were good for second in scoring on his team, finishing only behind league-leading scorer Rem Pitlick. Adams played in all but one of Muskegon's 60 regular season games. The Little Caesars and Honeybaked product is a native of Brighton, MI, and is committed to the University of North Dakota. Adams is a prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft.

Eeli Tolvanen (F), Sioux City Musketeers

The 17-year old put up 38 points (17 G, 21 A) over 49 games for the Musketeers. Those 38 points were good for sixth among all first-year players. His 17 goals put him tied for fourth among all rookies, and the 21 assists were good for ninth in rookie scoring. He was a force on special teams as well, as the Finnish winger tallied six power play goals and two shorthanded goals on the year. Prior to joining Sioux City via a tender, Tolvanen played for the prestigious Espoo junior program in Finland. He has also represented his home country on the international stage during the U17 World Hockey Championships and the U18 World Junior Championships. Tolvanen is a top prospect for the 2017 NHL Draft.

Andrew Peeke (D), Green Bay Gamblers

The 18-year old Peeke finished 11th in rookie scoring with 30 points (4 G, 26 A). His 30 points was second for rookie defensemen. The 26 assists were fifth among all rookies and second among all first-year defensemen behind only Jacob Bryson. The Parkland, FL native helped the Gamblers to a 37-16-4-3 record and the number two seed in the Eastern Conference. He had a four-game point streak from March 26th to April 3rd, and he also played in both the World Junior A Challenge as well as the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, where he pick up an assist. Prior to his time in Green Bay, Peeke played for Selects Hockey Academy. He is currently ranked 57th on the NHL Central Scouting North American Skater List, and is a prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft. Peeke is committed to the University of Notre Dame.

Jacob Bryson (D), Omaha Lancers

The Lancers blueliner had a great first season in Omaha, as he scored three goals and added 28 assists for 31 points in 56 games over the course of the season. His 28 assists led all first-year defensemen and were fourth among all rookies. He finished the season with 31 points, good for 10th among rookies. The London, Ontario native had a pair of three-game point streaks, and he was also selected to participate in the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game at his home rink in Omaha, NE on January 4th. He is committed to Providence College.

Ryan Edquist (G), Madison Capitols

The 18-year old netminder had a solid first full season in Madison, sporting a .906 SV% and a 3.02 GAA over the course of the season. His first USHL win was a memorable one, as he stopped all 40 shots he faced in a 4-0 Capitols win at Muskegon on October 10th. In addition to the shutout, Edquist was named USHL Goaltender of the Week for the performance. He was also named to the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Omaha, NE on December 15th but was unable to participate. The Lakeville, MN native was just one of four rookie goaltenders to play in the USHL this season. Edquist recently announced his commitment to play college hockey at Boston College and is a prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft.

USHL All-Rookie Second Team

Brannon McManus (F), Omaha Lancers

The 17-year old McManus played a significant role in the Lancers lineup throughout the course of the season. He played in all but two of the Lancers games due to international play, and tallied 39 points in his inaugural USHL campaign (17 G, 22 A). McManus finished fourth in rookie scoring and was consistent all season long. He had two goals and an assist on October 10th at Sioux Falls. For that effort he was named USHL Forward of the Week on October 12th. He also finished the season with a pair of three-point nights in a home-and-home series with the Tri-City Storm. Before the season, he was selected to play for Team USA in the prestigious Five Nations Tournament in Plymouth, MI. He also was a big asset on the man advantage as he put up seven power play goals over the course of the season. The product of Shattuck St. Mary's is committed to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota, and was a 2015 tender for the Omaha Lancers. McManus is a top prospect for the 2017 NHL Draft.

Matt Filipe (F), Cedar Rapids RoughRiders

Matt Filipe was a big part of Cedar Rapids season long success. The big RoughRiders forward finished with 36 points on the season (17 G, 19 A). He finished eighth in scoring among all first-year players and was fifth on the team in scoring. The Lynnfield, MA native was named to the 2015 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game, as well as the 2016 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, a game in which he had an assist and helped Team East secure a 6-2 victory. He was also named USHL Forward of the Week on November 30th after a weekend in which he scored three goals and added two assists. Filipe was ranked 51st on NHL Central Scouting's North American Skater List and is top prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft. He is committed to play college hockey at Northeastern University.

Shane Bowers (F), Waterloo Black Hawks

Shane Bowers enjoyed a very productive year as a 16-year old center for the playoff Waterloo Black Hawks squad. Bowers finished the season with 33 points (15 G, 18 A), good enough to crack the top ten in scoring on a team that finished third in the Western Conference. Those 33 points were good enough for ninth in scoring among all rookies. Bowers had a four-game point streak from December 19th through January 2nd, tallying four points in that span. He scored a goal and added two assists in a March 25th game at Sioux City, and he had a career high four-point game against the Musketeers on April 2nd, as he had four helpers in the game. Bowers is a Halifax, NS native and formerly played with the Halifax Macs and is currently uncommitted. Bowers is a top prospect for the 2017 NHL Draft.

Luke McInnis (D), Youngstown Phantoms

The first-year Youngstown blueliner had himself a solid season for the Phantoms. He finished third among rookie defensemen in scoring with 28 points (6 G, 22 A). The six goals were most among first-year blueliners, and the 22 assists were good for third in the same category. He was also second behind Connor Moore in points on the back end for Youngstown. He was named USHL Defenseman of the Week on October 5th after tallying a goal and four assists in his first three USHL games. The Hingham, MA native was named to the 2015 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game and won the game's prestigious MVP award, as well as the 2016 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, a game in which he had a goal to propel Team East to a 6-2 victory. He is ranked 141st on NHL Central Scouting's North American Skater List and is committed to Boston College.

Mikey Anderson (D), Waterloo Black Hawks

Anderson finished fifth in rookie scoring among defensemen (1 G, 15 A). The 16-year old defenseman played in 57 of Waterloo's 60 games and helped the Black Hawks secure the third seed in the Western Conference and advance to the Western Conference Final. He was the second leading rookie scorer in Waterloo behind only Shane Bowers. He finished the season with a three-game point streak from April 2nd to April 9th. The two assists he had against the Fighting Saints set his career high for both assists and points in a single game. Anderson also has four points in eight Clark Cup Playoffs games so far this season, including a pair of power play tallies. Anderson, a native of Roseville, MN, is committed to play his college hockey at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Anderson is a top prospect for the 2017 NHL Draft.

Dayton Rasmussen (G), Tri-City Storm

Rasmussen served as the backup to Jake Kielly over the course of the season, and played masterfully to help the Storm finish atop the Western Conference standings. After playing one game for the Waterloo Black Hawks, Rasmussen was dealt to Tri-City and finished with a 2.52 GAA and .913 SV% over the course of 15 starts with the Storm. He was also selected to the 2015 U.S. Under-18 Select Team for the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. A native of Eden Prarie, MN, Rasmussen is committed to play his college hockey at the University of Denver. Rasmussen is a top prospect for the 2017 NHL Draft.
