U.S. National Team News Release
UNITED STATES NATIONAL UNDER-18 TEAM
The U.S. Under-18 Team was idle this past week. The U-18 finished the college portion of the schedule with a win against Yale on Saturday, January 24 and a loss to Princeton on Sunday, January 25. The team finished with a 3-12-1 record against D-1 opponents. The D-1 schedule included nine teams that have been ranked, at one point during the season in the top 15.
2003-2004 INTERNATIONAL EVENTS
The Five Nations event is the second of three international events for the U-18 team. The team will face Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic and Finland. Event website:

In November, 2003 the team finished second at a Four Nations event in Huttwil, Switzerland. They defeated the Swiss team 4-0, Sweden, 4-2 and dropped a 4-3 contest to the Finland team. The final international event of the season for the U-18 team will be the 2004 IIHF World U-18 Championship in Minsk, Belarus.
At the 2004 IIHF Under 18 World Championships the US Team will play in Pool A against, Canada, Sweden, Belarus and Denmark. Pool B at the World Championship will consist of Slovakia, Russia, Czech Republic, Finland and Norway. The top two teams in each Pool receive a by into the semi-finals while the second and third place team in each pool will play a quarterfinal match-up (A2 vs. B3;B2 vs. A3). UNITED STATES NATIONAL UNDER-17 TEAM
The U.S. Under-17 Team, went 1-0-1 in NAHL play this past week defeating the Toledo IceDiggers 7-0 and earning a regulation tie against the NAHL North Division leading Soo Kewadin Casino Indians. With the three points the U-17 earned on the week they have moved into a third place tie with the Youngstown PHANTOMS. The top four teams in each NAHL Division will advance to the playoffs. The #1 team will play #4 while #2 plays #3 in a best of five opening round.
Wednesday, Jan. 29 â Toledo 0, USA 7
Jeff Frazee playing in his first game since January 4, 2004 improved his record to 16-8-1, stopping 28 shots as he and the US held the IceDiggers off the board on six power play attempts and earned a 7-0 victory.
The U-17 team got the only goal it would need all night as Jason Lawrence (Saugus, MA) tallied his 14th of the season at 2:12 of the first period. Lawrence received a pass behind the Toledo net from Nathan Lawrence (Stoughton, WI) skated around to the right side of the crease and stuffed home a quick forehand shot past Toledo goaltender Jason Kearney as the US cruised to the 7-0 white wash.
"I think with the changes in the roster, in the past several weeks, we are now getting familiar with each other," said Head Coach David Quinn. "We got off to a slow start last week and lost 7-2 to the same Toledo team, but we practiced hard and the guys are getting a much better sense of each other on the ice."
Sunday, Feb.1 â Soo 3, USA 2, OT
Under-17 Team fell to the NAHL North Division leading Soo Kewadin Casino Indians, 3-2, in overtime. The U-17 Team earned a point in the standings (a regulation tie) moving them into a third place tie with the Youngstown PHANTOMS.
Saugus, MA native Jason Lawrence got the U-17 squad on the board as he notched his 16th goal of the season with just :49 left in the first period. Playing the period to the complete end the US fired the puck into right corner of their attacking zone where a hard charging Ryan Stoa (Bloomington, MN) scooped it up and fed it to Lawrence who knocked it past Soo goaltender Derek McIntyre.
The Soo countered with two goals in the second session as NAHL Leading point getter Logan Bittle and Robbie Nowinski scored within 1:10 of each other.
Peter Mueller (Bloomington, MN) got the game even at two with his 11th score of the season at the 5:20 mark of the final third period. John Kemp (Arcadia, CA) earned his 19th assist of on the play while Chris Cahill (North Andover, MA) recorded his 15th helper on the game-tying goal.
2003-2004 INTERNATIONAL EVENTS The Four Nations event in Piestany, Slovakia is the third and final international event for the U-17 in the 2003-2004 season. At the Four Nations they will face Switzerland, Germany and Slovakia. Event website:

The first international for the U-17 was a victory at the Four Nations Tournament in Magnitogorsk, Russia. The US team defeated Slovakia (10-3), Russia (4-3) and Switzerland (6-2) to win the event. At the second international for the U-17 the team finished 4th at the 2004 World U-17 Hockey Challenge in St. John's, Newfoundland. The team finished the event 3-3 and an exhibition win.

JANIK, HUTCHINSON, KOMISAREK NAMED AHL ALL-STARS
The 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic will take place at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., home of the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. The event gets underway on Sun., February 8, with the 2004 AHL All-Star Skills Competition at 7:00 p.m. (ET), with the annual All-Star Game following at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on Mon., February 9. The 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic will be televised to more than 100 million households on 20 regional television partners in the United States, and on Rogers Sportsnet nationally in Canada.
DOUG JANIK - Janik, 23, has recorded a goal and 10 assists in 45 games with Rochester this season, and also skated in two NHL contests with the Buffalo Sabres, who selected him in the second round of the 1999 Entry Draft. The native of Agawam, Mass., played three years at the University of Maine, winning a national championship in 1999, and represented the United States at the World Junior Championships in 1999 and 2000
ANDREW HUTCHINSON - Hutchinson, 23, played four seasons at Michigan State (1998-2002) and was a third-round draft choice by Nashville in 1999. The Evanston, Ill., native is currently on recall to the NHL's Predators, where he is tied for fourth among NHL rookies with a plus-6 rating, adding two goals and two assists in 12 contests. Hutchinson has picked up 13 points and a plus-12 rating in 22 games with Milwaukee this year.
