Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Misael Urbina and Willie Joe Garry Jr. led the Mighty Mussels' tenth inning comeback Sunday, as Fort Myers walked off on Bradenton 6-5 in front of a season-best attendance of 4,173 at Hammond Stadium.
With the Mighty Mussels (31-23) trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the tenth, Jeferson Morales started the inning at second base against Bradenton (35-19) reliever Oliver Mateo (1-2). Urbina led off the inning by crushing a double to the wall in left center to plate Morales and tie the game 5-5.
After a wild pitch moved Urbina to third, Aaron Sabato chopped a squibber to third baseman Dariel Lopez. Lopez shoveled a throw to catcher Eli Wilson, who tagged Urbina at the plate to keep the game alive. After a wild pitch and an infield single moved Sabato to third with one out, Will Holland was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter was Garry Jr., who clobbered a line drive to deep center to score Sabato and win the game for Fort Myers.
The Mussels' bullpen did not allow an earned run over seven terrific innings Sunday. Steven Cruz fanned three over two scoreless before Osiris German struck out four over two shutout. Matthew Swain (4-1) pitched around a pair of jams in the ninth and tenth to earn the win.
Sunday's game remained scoreless through two innings before Fort Myers broke through against Marauders starter Jared Jones. With one out, Morales was hit by a pitch before stealing second. Urbina followed with a single to center to make it 1-0. The next hitter was Sabato, who roped a double down the left field line to extend the lead to 2-0. Two batters later, Holland connected on a two-bagger to the left center gap to cap the rally at 3-0 Mussels.
However, Bradenton battled back in the fourth against Fort Myers starter Bobby Milacki. The Marauders received home runs from Jase Bowen and Yoyner Fajardo to take a 4-3 lead.
With the Mussels struggling against Marauders right-hander Domingo Gonzalez, Justin Washington singled to center with one out. Ruben Santana then walked before Washington was thrown out at third. With a runner on second and two outs, Bradenton shortstop Maikol Escotto threw a ball away to allow Santana to score and tie the game at 4-4.
The Mussels' win evens the season series with the Marauders at 6-6, with twelve more matchups remaining between the two clubs.
Fort Myers will enjoy an off day on Monday before starting a six-game series in Port St. Lucie at 6:10 p.m. on Tuesday. The Mighty Mussels Baseball Network will broadcast the first two games of the series. Mussels Pre-Game Live will begin at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday.
