Keene Swamp Bats News Release

HATFORD V.T. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks (12-10) recorded three innings with three or more runs en route to a 12-4 victory over the Keene SwampBats (11-12) on Thursday night at Maxfield Sports Complex.

A four-run third inning gave the Nighthawks the lead for good as a bases loaded walk issued to Hunter Gibson (Wichita State) tied the game and Matt Tarabek (Fordham) gave the hosts the lead for good at 5-3 with a two-out, two-run single.

Swampbats starter Kyle Whitten (Virginia) allowed five runs on eight hits to go along with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.0 IP and was dealt the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the summer.

Upper Valley also plated three runs in the sixth and four in the eighth.

The SwampBats had cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the sixth on a sac fly from Alex Griffith (Francis Marion), but the Nighthawks responded with three two-out runs in the bottom half of the frame to make it an 8-4 game.

A double steal by Michael Woodworth (UConn) scored Alex Carballo (Kennesaw State), and that opened the scoring for Keene in the top of the first. Brandon Smith (Dayton) followed that with an RBI single to center that scored Woodworth, making the score 2-0.

The score was 3-1 in the top of the third inning in favor of the SwampBats after Joe Breaux (Alabama) singled home a run.

Upper Valley starter Reid VanScoter (Binghamton) gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits to go along with four strikeouts over 4.0 IP in a no-decision.

RHP Jordan DiValerio (St. Joseph's) gave up one run on five hits in four innings of relief to earn the win for the Nighthawks and improve to 2-0.

Five different SwampBats had multi-hit games: Breaux (2-5, RBI), Carballo (2-5, 2 R), Cordell Dunn Jr. (Grayson County College-3-5, 2B), Smith (2-4, RBI) and Woodworth (2-5, R, 2 SB).

RHP Erick Zecha (RPI) tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Keene.

The SwampBats return home to Alumni Field to take on the Mystic Schooners on Friday, July 6th. Our beloved mascot Ribby celebrates his birthday tomorrow. An appearance by Wally the Green Monster and Smokey Bear will cap off the special occasion. First pitch is at 6:30, and you can listen to the game on FM 104.1 AM 1220 Fox Sports Keene and necbl.com.
