Upper Valley Nighthawks News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - A 2-RBI double from newcomer Austin Wilhite was only the start of a four-run top of the 2nd inning for Upper Valley, which eventually led them on to a 7-3 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers on Wednesday night in Montpelier.

With the victory, Upper Valley takes 2-0 lead in the Governor's Cup series, moves to 11-10, and currently sits in 3rd place in the NECBL Northern Division. Meanwhile, Vermont is 6-16 and sits in 6th place in the Northern Division.

The Nighthawks were first to get on the scoreboard, as Drew Tipton (Arkansas State University) scored on a wild pitch in the first frame to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Upper Valley kept on charging in the 2nd frame, as Austin Wilhite (Georgia Tech) made a splash in his first Nighthawks at-bat, hammering a 2-RBI double to right field.

Back-to-back doubles from Hunter Gibson (Wichita State University) and Anthony Meduri (Binghamton University) added two more runs to the Nighthawks tally, making the score 5-0 after just two innings.

WIlhite contributed again for Upper Valley in the 3rd inning, when a sacrifice fly drove in Ross Cadena (Wichita State University).

Things fell silent for both sides through the middle innings, but the Nighthawks came back to life in the 7th inning when Cadena singled to score Anthony Quirion (Lamar University).

Vermont finally countered in the home-half of the 7th with a 2-RBI double from Nate Grys that put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard.

A sacrifice fly in the final inning was able to add one more run to Vermont's tally, but the Nighthawks clung to their 7-3 lead, and captured Game 2 of the Governor's Cup series.

Nighthawks starter Cole Stetzar (St. Joseph's University) hurled three scoreless innings, gave up five hits, and walked two. Reliever Stephen Hansen (Iona College) followed with two hitless innings, in which he struck out a pair of Mountaineers. Wes Bucher (University of West Georgia) pitched the 6th and 7th innings, surrendering two runs on two hits. Alvin Melendez (Fordham University) pitched a quiet 8th inning, before David Sampson (Plymouth State University) came in for the 9th frame and kept Vermont at bay, surrendering a lone run.

The Nighthawks return home Thursday night, playing host to the Keene Swamp Bats at 6:30 PM. Thursday is Beach Night at the ballpark, where Maxfield Sports Complex will transform into a beach party. Expect everything except the ocean itself. Those attending in a Hawaiian shirt will get free admission! If you can't make it to the ballpark, Dan Stein will have all of the action covered on the NECBL Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 PM.
