PEORIA, Arizona - In a physical return to league play, Arizona United Soccer Club fell to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, 3-1. The loss ends their five-match unbeaten streak.
Switchbacks FC took control early as Josh Suggs scored the first goal of the match in the eighth minute off an unassisted corner kick. Even though Arizona struggled to keep up with the organized possession of Switchbacks FC, defender Julian Ringhof put United on the board and tied the game 1-1, finding the back of the net off a header from a corner kick sent in by midfielder Luke Rooney in the 19th minute.
"I thought the timing for the goal was good," Ringhof said. "We didn't start well and I thought it got us back in the game."
United began to settle into the game after scoring a goal and found more opportunities on net. But, Colorado Springs' Miguel Gonzalez put Switchbacks FC ahead in the 32nd minute as he beat an Arizona defender and curled his shot inside the far right post to make it 2-1 at the half.
Both teams started the second half strong as the match began to take on an intense physical tone. Arizona continued to create chances on goal. Their most meaningful chance came from Tommy Williams' header off a free kick in the 74th minute that hit the post. However, Switchbacks FC sealed the deal in the 77th minute as substitute Saeed Robinson beat United goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski 1-on-1 to put his team up 3-1.
Head coach Frank Yallop commented on United's fourth loss of the season.
"Just disappointed to lose at home," Yallop said. "We've had two decent performances, probably should have won both games at home and now tonight we have another performance that's not what we want. We want to win and entertain and do well and get points and we didn't do that."
Ringhof said he believes his team needs to start focusing on the simpler things and get back to the basics of the game in order to get a result against Los Angeles Galaxy II in their upcoming league match.
Yallop is confident in his team's ability to rebound from the loss.
"We'll have a good week of practice and figure out what we did wrong, watch the video on Monday, look over things, and make sure we put right what we did wrong tonight," Yallop said.
Arizona United SC is now 2-4-3 in USL play and is on the road next weekend in Los Angeles to take on LA Galaxy II on Saturday May 28th at 7:30 p.m.
