United Forward Rafael Burgos Called up to To Play for El Salvador National Team

Minneapolis, Minn. (Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014) -- Minnesota United forward Rafael Burgos has been called up for international duty by his home country El Salvador to compete in the upcoming Copa Centroamericana. The tournament will run from September 3rd through the 13th.

This will be the 13th Copa Centroamericana and will be played in four different locations across the United States. Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama will be competing for the title along with El Salvador this year. The top four teams will automatically qualify for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, with fifth place going into a playoff with the fifth place team from the 2014 Caribbean Cup for an additional spot in the 2015 tournament.

Burgos competed for his country in the 2013 edition of the tournament, scoring a goal and helping his team finish third after losing to eventual champion Costa Rica. Burgos was the top goalscorer in the 2011 tournament. The striker has made 31 appearances for El Salvador since 2010, scoring ten goals.

The 5'8" 26-year-old La Paz native joined Minnesota United in July from Austrian Bundesliga team SV Ried. While with SV Ried, Burgos spent time on loan in Hungary with Kecskeméti TE in the 2012-2013 season before playing with Hungarian champions Gy�'r in 2013. He made 41 appearances and scored 10 goals combined for both teams. Once the Copa Centroamericana tournament is complete Burgos will return to finish out the remainder of the 2014 North American Soccer League season.
