Uncontested own goal sparks Wave Victory
February 3, 2008 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
NEWARK, NJ (Feb. 3, 2008) -- The most bizarre goal you'll ever see triggered a third-quarter outburst that led the Milwaukee Wave to a 9-6 victory over the New Jersey Ironmen on Sunday at the Prudential Center.
It was the second victory in 24 hours for the Wave (14-6), who extended their MISL lead to one game.
The Wave played without MISL scoring leader Greg Howes, who was given a rest after slightly injuring his knee Saturday night against California. Points were tough to come by, until the Wave got a gift 24 seconds into the third quarter.
With the Ironmen in possession in a 2-all game, New Jersey's Gary Brooks was controlling the ball near the midfield line close to the boards. He turned and played a simple pass back toward goalkeeper Tony Meola to keep possession. Meola, however, had ventured just out of the penalty area, and when he stumbled trying to recover, the ball rolled slowly into the net to give the Wave a 5-2 lead. Jonathan Santos received credit for the 3-pointer.
Two more Wave goals, by Troy Dusosky and Anthony Maher, followed in the next six minutes, and it was 9-2.
New Jersey - also playing its second game in 24 hours - closed the gap with a pair of goals and brought out a sixth attacker with 4:10 remaining. The Ironmen (10-9) were unable to beat Nick Vorberg, however, and lost their fourth consecutive game. Milwaukee is now 10-1 when holding opponents under 10 points.
Marcelo Fontana scored the Wave's first goal, his third in two games. The Wave visit Philadelphia next Saturday.
