UIF Week 13 Preview
Published on June 16, 2006 under United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release
FT. WAYNE FREEDOM (3-8), at ROCK RIVER RAPTORS (7-4) - It looks as though Fort Wayne must win the rest of their regular season games to have a shot at the playoffs. The Freedom end the season with four games against teams in the top five of the UIF standings. Rocky Harvey was back to his old tricks last week as he tallied 72 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Freedom's loss to Evansville. With Harvey back, there is reason to believe that Fort Wayne could run the table. Rock River took a step back last week in their quest to grab one of the top two seeds in the playoffs. The Raptors are two games behind Lexington with four to play, so they will need to win-out and get some help along the way. The Raptors have created the second least amount of turnovers in the league with 16 and have given up the least amount of turnovers with 10. The Raptors have scored the second most touchdowns in the UIF with 64 and are averaging 46.4 points per game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm CST at the Metro Centre, "The Rock Pile."
LEXINGTON HORSEMEN (9-2), at OHIO VALLEY GREYHOUNDS (6-5) - With a win this week, Lexington will clinch the UIF East Division title and guarantee themselves at least the #3 seed in the UIF Playoffs. This game will match-up two of the most exciting quarterbacks in the UIF with Lexington's Eddie Eviston and Ohio Valley's Matt Kohn showing off their talents. Eviston provided the team with six touchdown passes last week to bring his season total to a league leading 43. Kohn currently leads the league with 1,922 passing yards and is second in the UIF with 38 touchdown passes. The Horsemen defense has been solid all year long as well as they are allowing only 33.8 points per game, which ranks second in the UIF. The Greyhounds have one of the most balanced teams in the UIF as they are ranked fourth in scoring offense (42.7 ppg) and ranked fifth in scoring defense (40.9 ppg). With a win, the Greyhounds could be in position to clinch a playoff spot next week in Fort Wayne. Game time is slated for a 7:30 pm EST kickoff at Wesbanco Arena in Wheeling, WV.
OMAHA BEEF (5-6), at BLOOMINGTON EXTREME (5-6) - The Beef and the Extreme meet in another important game as the two teams race towards the playoffs. Bloomington got the best of Omaha in Week 9 as the Extreme went into Omaha and won 46-40. Omaha had a very impressive win last week vs. Rock River. The Beef were the first team to score over 50 on the Rock River defense as they put up 70 on the Raptors. Wide receiver Jason Mitchell caught all of Andy Majors' four touchdown passes and RJ Rollins ran for 90 yards and a touchdown for the powerful Beef offense. Majors and Rollins were both honored with the Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week last weekend. Bloomington's performance last week was not nearly as exciting, as the Extreme fell to Ohio Valley 43-37. Extreme quarterback Dusty Burk made his first appearance since Week 7. The Extreme went 3-1 without Burk, but should be improved as Burk has 22 touchdown passes on the season and leads the team with six rushing touchdowns despite being sidelined for four weeks. Burk did not play in the last meeting with Omaha. The U. S. Cellular Coliseum will host the Week 13 game in Bloomington, IL at 7:05 pm CST Saturday night.
PEORIA ROUGH RIDERS (0-11), at EVANSVILLE BLUECATS (4-7) - Peoria's disappointing season continues, as they were shutout last week by Sioux Falls 71-0. That game marked the first shutout in UIF history. The Rough Riders managed just 47 yards of total offense vs. the Storm. On a positive note, Peoria has recorded the third most sacks in the league with 18 and wide receiver Phil Taylor Jr. is tied for eighth in the UIF in touchdowns with 10. Evansville defeated Fort Wayne last week and will need to rattle off a few more victories if the BlueCats want to make the playoffs. Evansville is currently in eighth place in the UIF and is one game out of a tie for the sixth and final playoff spot. The BlueCats defense is allowing the third least yards per game with 200.4 and is allowing the least rushing yards per game with 56.9. Quarterback Aaron Leak is playing better as he is completing 52% of his passes and has thrown 11 touchdowns to go along with eight interceptions this season. Dale Jennings is having an outstanding season as well as he has gained 910 all-purpose yards and scored 17 touchdowns this season. Kickoff is slated for 7:05 pm CST at Roberts Stadium, "The Fish Bowl."
SIOUX CITY BANDITS (5-6), at SIOUX FALLS STORM (11-0) - The Bandits offense has been their downfall this season as they are only averaging 34.5 points per game, which ranks eighth in the UIF. The Bandits revolving door at quarterback continued last week with both Hosea Harris and Antoine Taylor both taking snaps. Five different Bandits have seen action at quarterback this season. Defensively, Sioux City is more stable as the Bandits are giving up the least yards per game in the UIF at 171.2. Sioux City's defense is only allowing 35 points per game, which ranks third in the league. Sioux Falls clinched a first-round by in the UIF playoffs last week. The team also recorded the first shutout in UIF history and set a UIF record for most consectutive wins. Defensive lineman Nate Fluit recorded 3.0 sacks last week to bring his league-leading total to 10.5. This is the first of back-to-back meetings between these teams. Game time is at 7:05 pm CST as the Sioux Falls Arena, "The Storm Shelter."
