Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA - (Monday, February 23, 2009) - The Richmond Kickers U.S. Soccer Development Academy Teams finished the regular season on a positive note with some strong performances over the weekend. The U-18 Kickers qualified for the postseason playoffs collecting 30 points to finish with a 9-2-3 record. Only CASL Chelsea FC has the ability to overtake them for first place in their division.

The U-16's took another three points from CASL when Nathan Foglesong scored the game winner with a delightful chip into the upper 90 after great work down the flank from Russell Bootwright. Unfortunately, they were unable to repeat on Sunday suffering a 1-0 deficit to Greensboro SC.

The U14's sampled the Academy experience when a very young Kickers team faced an even younger CASL Chelsea FC squad. Two great first half goals proved the difference in the match. Dan Lauretano hit a stunning 30 yard free kick and Adam Warren raced in to slip the ball past the goalkeeper after a defense-splitting pass from Ben Gallik.

Postseason Playoff Information

The Development Academy 2008-09 season includes a new postseason process introduced at the Academy Annual General Meeting in July 2008. Teams are ranked in their division based on the points accumulated from only their Division games. The top three (3) teams from each division automatically qualify for the Playoffs, taking place at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. June 26-29, 2009.

Additionally, the fourth place team in the division standings will be eligible to qualify for a wildcard berth to the Playoffs. The Wild Card candidates are then ranked based on their points/game from their Overall Record, including Division, Conference and Showcase games. The top five (5) Wild Card candidates qualify for the Playoffs.

Once in the playoffs, the 32 Playoffs teams will be seeded 1 to 32 based on their points/game from their Overall Record, including Division, Conference and Showcase games. The teams will then be split into eight (8) groups of four (4) teams based on their seeds, as indicated below. The teams will play three (3) games and the group winner will qualify for Finals Week, to be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA, July 11-18, 2009.
