U.S. Open Cup Debut Awaits Nashville SC
May 15, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release
NASHVILLE - In a season of firsts, Nashville SC will get another one on Wednesday night in its first Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game against Inter Nashville FC at Vanderbilt Sports Complex at 7:30 p.m. It's the first soccer game against two intra-Nashville teams, so it will be historic on more than one front.
How We Got Here
Nashville SC was given an automatic entry to the U.S. Open Cup second round. All professional soccer teams in the U.S. receive automatic entry with USL teams entering the tournament in the second round and MLS clubs entering in the fourth.
As an amateur club, Inter Nashville had a much more difficult road to this game. By advancing to the final eight of the National NPSL tournament in 2017, Inter became one of 19 NPSL teams to participate in the Open Cup. Last week, Inter beat the Charlotte Eagles in the first round 6-1 on the road, setting up Wednesday night's matchup.
Nashville Narratives
Coming off its biggest win of the season, Nashville SC will be riding high into its matchup with Inter Nashville. While Inter might not be a team of professionals, they will have something to prove to the bigger, professional club in Music City. Nashville SC will have to remain poised and in form to ensure safety into the next round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Nashville SC is undefeated in Nashville since the season began in March. A pair of 2-0 wins against the Charlotte Independence and Louisville City was preceded by a 0-0 draw against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Dating back to the preseason, Vandy Soccer Complex will be the fourth different venue Nashville has played in alongside First Tennessee Park, Nissan Stadium and Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
