WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) and Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) each recorded three assists, while six different players scored for the U.S. National Under-18 Team as it dropped Williams College, 6-1, here tonight at Lansing-Chapman Ice Rink.
Bill Arnold (Needham, Mass.) staked Team USA to an early 1-0 lead when he popped out to the high slot, took a feed from Adam Clendening (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and snapped a shot over the glove of netminder Ryan Purdy just 1:55 into the game. Clendening added a goal of his own at 4:37 after he took a feed from Shore, dragged the puck from right to left and snapped a shot through a screen and past Purdy to double the U.S. advantage. U.S. goaltender Andy Iles (Ithaca, N.Y.) saw just four shots, but saved them all to keep the U.S. ahead after the first 20 minutes.
Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) gave Team USA a three-goal cushion after he streaked past a defenseman on the left side, cut to the net, put the puck to his backhand and lifted it over Purdy's glove 4:59 into the second stanza. Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) tipped Jacob Fallon's (Southlake, Texas) one-timer through new netminder Marc Pulde at 13:28 for a power-play marker. Just 2:11 later, Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa.) fed Stephen Johns (Wampum, Pa.) who rifled a slap shot past Pulde to make it 5-0. Eric Rubino tallied for the Ephs at 16:25 to give Williams the only goal it could muster. Iles made seven more stops in the second.
Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) scored at 7:42 of the third frame to account for the 6-1 final. Iles turned aside all 10 shots he saw in the closing 20 minutes to give him 21 saves for the night.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team is back at home Friday when it takes on United States Hockey League East Division foe Cedar Rapids at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube at 7:05 p.m. EST.
