Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Two shorthanded goals by Bryce Ravndalen weren't enough for the Waterloo Black Hawks to overcome the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders; the hosts prevailed 4-3 in overtime Saturday.
Cedar Rapids opened the scoring after a takeaway at the Black Hawk line to create an opportunity for Eric Robinson 5:34 into the game. Ravndalen tied it, swiping a pass between RoughRider point men, then going the length of the ice to score on a shorthanded breakaway at 15:09.
Ravndalen gave Waterloo the lead at 5:38 of the second. Penalty-killing once more, Dan Sova was tripped-up at center, but still managed to redirect the puck to Ravndalen who turned a defenseman the wrong way, shot, then scored on his own rebound. Cedar Rapids tied the game 1:15 later on a long shot through traffic by Bryce Aneloski.
Waterloo reassumed the lead with 4:05 remaining in the second period when Jamie Hill fed the puck from behind the net to Patrick Divjak at the top of the crease. The game was tied again after a steal by Jeff Costello deep in the Waterloo zone just 35 seconds into the third.
Mac Bennett's long wrister brought the game to an end 2:26 into overtime. C.J. Groh stopped the RoughRiders' other 41 chances, stacking up the largest number of saves by a Black Hawk goalie this season.
The Hawks play three road games, at Sioux Falls, Tri City, and Des Moines, to round out the pre-Christmas schedule. Waterloo's next home game is on New Years' Eve against Lincoln.
