U.S. National Team News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) and Chase Balisy (Fullerton, Calif.) each scored second-period goals for the U.S. National Under-18 Team, but a late power-play marker lifted the Omaha Lancers to a 3-2 victory here tonight at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
C.J. Ludwig gave the Lancers the first lead of the game with just 1:44 to play in the opening frame after his shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle beat Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) for a power-play tally.
Team USA answered back late in the second stanza when Nieto stole the puck and put a shot past Jeff Teglia from the right side of the slot with 2:55 to play in the period. Just 1:03 later, charging into the Omaha zone two-on-one, Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) fed Balisy who roofed a shot over Teglia from the left side to make it 2-1. Campbell stopped all eight shots he faced in the period.
After a turnover in front of the U.S. net, Seth Ambroz fed Matt White who put the puck into the open goal from the top of the crease just 1:55 into the third frame to knot the score. With the Lancers on a power play and just 2:17 to play in regulation, Ludwig converted on an Erik Haula pass to give Omaha the 3-2 lead. Team USA was unable to answer, allowing the Lancers to escape with the win.
Campbell turned aside 22 shots in the contest.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team wraps up its Nebraska road trip Saturday when it meets the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 p.m. CST at the Viaero Events Center in Kearney.
