ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored two goals and Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y.) added the game-winning marker in overtime as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated the Marquette Rangers 4-3 here tonight.
Lynch scored the game's first goal at 15:57 of the first period while Team USA was on the penalty kill. Lynch received a pass from Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.), put the puck on his forehand, and slid the puck between the legs of Marquette goalie Dan Sullivan for a short--handed goal.
At 2:48 in the second frame, Marquette tied the score, 1-1, on a goal by Garrett Ladd. Team USA quickly regained the lead at 3:56 when Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) took a pass from Cam Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and fired a slapshot into the upper right corner of the net for a power-play goal. Jerry D'Amigo (Binghamton, N.Y.) also received an assist on the play. The lead was increased to two at 17:50 when John Henrion's (Holden, Mass.) shot bounced over Sullivan and sat in the crease until Lynch shoved the puck into the open net.
The third stanza was scoreless until Marquette's Mike Lennon tallied on a penalty shot at 18:09 to narrow the U.S. lead to 3-2. Marquette, with Sullivan pulled in favor of an extra attacker, tied the game with just seven seconds to play when Reed Rushing grabbed a rebound and put the puck past netminder Brandon Maxwell (Winter Park, Fla.).
In the overtime period, Morin won the game for Team USA at 1:13 when he fired a wrist shot from inside the left faceoff circle and fit the puck underneath Sullivan's left arm for the goal.
Maxwell turned aside 20 shots to earn the victory.
The Under-18s will travel to Babson College in North Andover, Mass., for the Babson Invitational Tournament taking place from November 29-30. On Saturday, they take on Babson College at 4:00 p.m. On Sunday, they will meet a yet to be determined opponent.
