ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Despite a 42-save effort from netminder John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.), the U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped a 5-1 decision to the Waterloo Black Hawks here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Brady Vail put the Black Hawks on the board first with 4:32 remaining in the opening period when he stripped a defender of the puck and snapped a shot into the upper-right corner of the net. Gibson made 13 saves during the opening stanza to keep Team USA within a goal.

Waterloo doubled its advantage after Brock Montpetit deflected the puck past Gibson 4:21 into the second stanza. Just 2:10 later, Adam Reid (Chino Hills, Calif.) cut the deficit in half for Team USA when he deflected Rocco Grimaldi's (Rossmoor, Calif.) feed through the legs of netminder C.J. Motte for a power-play goal. The Black Hawks answered back to regain the two-goal advantage at 16:16 with a 5-on-3 power-play goal off the stick of Brock Montpetit. Just 2:04 later, Patrick Divjak slammed the puck home from the right side to make it 4-1 with a Waterloo power-play goal. Gibson made another 16 saves in the second to keep Team USA within striking distance.

Neither team got on the scoreboard until just seven seconds remained in regulation when J.T. Brown tapped home a rebound from the left side to account for the 5-1 final. Gibson collected 13 more saves in the closing 20 minutes.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will returns to action Thursday (Feb. 4) at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube when it meets the Lincoln Stars at 7:05 p.m. EST.
