U.S. National Team News Release
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Jordan Schroeder (Lakeville, Minn.) recorded a hat trick to help the U.S. National Under-18 Team to a 5-2 victory over the Traverse City North Stars tonight in North American Hockey League play at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
Schroeder got the U.S. on the board first when he caught a rebound off the pads of North Stars netminder Kyle Jendra, placed the puck on the ice and deposited it underneath a sliding Jendra to give Team USA the 1-0 lead 8:47 into the opening frame. U.S. forward Jimmy Hayes (Dorchester, Mass.) made it a 2-0 contest 1:31 later when he snapped a wrist shot over Jendra's shoulder from the right circle.
Traverse City replied with two goals to open the second frame to knot the game at 2-2. North Stars forward Harrison Niemann buried a two-on-one feed from Mike Glaesmer 4:56 into the period, followed by a Zach Hitch tally 1:44 later to make it a 2-2 contest.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team regained the lead with 5:15 remaining in the period on Schroeder's second of the night. U.S. forward Vinny Saponari (Powder Springs, Ga.) fired a shot from the top of the North Stars zone that Jendra stopped, but the rebound went right to Schroeder who buried it into the back of the net to make it a 3-2 game. Colin Wilson (Greenwich, Conn.) notched his 24th goal of the season 1:27 later to give Team USA the 4-2 advantage. U.S. defenseman Tommy Cross (Simsbury, Conn.) snuck in from the left point on the power play and fired a shot at Jendra and Wilson batted in the rebound.
With 24 seconds left in the game Schroeder buried an empty-net goal to complete the hat trick when he out-raced the North Stars defenseman to a loose puck and deposited it into the unattended goal.
Team USA netminder Michael Clemente (Great Falls, Va.) made 22 stops tonight in his first career start with the U.S. National Under-18 Team.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team will close out the regular season when it hosts the Springfield (Ill.) Jr. Blues on Friday and Saturday (Mar. 23-24) at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
