ANN ARBOR - Jordan Schroeder scored a hat trick on Saturday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, leading the U.S. National Team Development Program's Under-18 squad to a 5-2 victory over Traverse City, completing a two-game grab from the visiting North Stars. TC pulled even against the U-18s after going down by a 2-0 margin, but the hosts scored the contest's final three goals, including Schroeder's empty-netter in the final seconds.
"It was a good game and a good weekend," said Stars head coach Scott Gardiner. "We played well both nights, and (goalie Kyle) Jendra was outstanding again tonight. We never stopped battling and I'm proud of the effort we got from the guys."
Down by a pair of goals at the first intermission, Traverse City got them back quickly to open the second stanza, as Harrison Niemann (4:56 in) and Ben Plocar (6:40) knotted the affair. For Nieman, whose goal was set up by Mike Glaesmer and Aaron Pietila, it was his 12th of the season, while Plocar's seventh of the year was assisted by John Foguth and Jameson Raymond.
The Under-18s got a pair of late goals in the second and Schroeder's empty-netter to walk away with four points in a very competitive series. Michael Clemente fended off 26 of 28 shots on net, while Jendra stopped 40 shots for the second straight evening.
Traverse City (17-34-5) returns to the friendly confines of Centre ICE arena on Friday, hosting geographic rival Alpena in the final TC meeting between the clubs this year.
"I'm looking for our guys to bring the same kind of intensity and energy to that series with Alpena," Gardiner said. "They're a different team (than the U-18s), but we'll play the same kind of game we did this weekend and I'm looking forward to that."
