U.S. National Under-17 Team Upends St. Louis, 7-3

November 17, 2007 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
U.S. National Team News Release

ST. LOUIS The U.S. National Under-17 Team received goals from five different players, including two-goal efforts from Jeremy Morin (Auburn,

N.Y.) and David Valek (Orem, Utah), en route to earning a 7-3 win over St. Louis Saturday night at the Summit Center. Goaltender Michael Clemente (Great Falls, Va.) made 20 saves and pushed his season record to 1-1-0.

"Tonight was a good bounce-back win for our team," said Ron Rolston, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "It was more of a complete game than yesterday, and we needed a victory like this. We lost three players to injuries, but we were still able to execute well with a short lineup."

Team USA scored a pair of goals in the first period, thanks to markers from Morin and Kevin Lynch (Grosse Point, Mich.). Morin notched his team-leading 15th goal of the season off an assist from Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) at the 4:18 mark. Lynch recorded his second goal in as many nights courtesy of a helper off the stick of Ryan Bourque (Boxford, Mass.).

The second period proved to be an offensive exhibition, as the teams combined to score five goals.

Brown gave Team USA a 3-0 advantage with his fourth goal of the year, an unassisted tally, at 3:54.

After Ben Miller tallied a power-play goal for St. Louis at 9:03, the U.S. National Under-17 Team added markers at 13:46 and 15:51 to open up a 5-1 lead. Kyle Palmieri (Montvale, N.J.) chipped in his 11th tally of the campaign off assists from Sam Calabrese (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.). Valek tacked on an unassisted goal for Team USA, his second of the weekend.

St. Louis recorded its second goal of the evening when Sam Bozoian scored with 1:08 left in the middle stanza. Mike Merrifield added a shorthanded goal for the Bandits 3:38 into the final period, to make it a 5-3 game.

Team USA added a pair of insurance goals in the third stanza to secure a commanding 7-3 lead. Valek scored an unassisted shorthanded marker at 7:55, while Morin netted a power-play goal at the 10:17 mark. Valek and Bourque doled out assists on Morin's goal.

Both teams finished with 23 shots on goal in the contest. Team USA went 1-for-4 on the power play, compared to a 1-for-5 mark for St. Louis.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team (9-10-0) hosts Mahoning Valley on Tuesday (Nov. 20) at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
