U.S. National Under-17 Team Looks To Continue Winning Ways

THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-17 Team will attempt to continue the team's two-game winning streak as it takes on the Mahoning Valley Phantoms (2-2-0) of the North American Hockey League at 7:05 p.m. on Friday night (10/14/05) at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

U.S. HEAD COACH RON ROLSTON: Ron Rolston is in his second season with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Rolston has amassed a career record with the NTDP of 47-17-7.

U.S. HEAD COACH RON ROLSTON ON THIS WEEK: "We made positive steps as a team last weekend and are looking to continue our steady improvement this weekend against Mahoning Valley. Mahoning Valley will be coming into the weekend with a lot of confidence after their sweep against Cleveland."

SERIES RECORDS: The U.S. National Under-17 Team and the Mahoning Valley Phantoms have not yet met this season. Mahoning Valley's team name in the 2004-05 season was the Youngstown (Ohio) Phantoms.

NATIONAL TEAM DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ALUMNI UPDATE:2004-05 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Finalist, Brett Sterling (Pasadena, Calif.) had two goals and two assists in two games in route to Colorado College wining the 2005 Icebreaker Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. ... University of Michigan freshman defenseman and third-overall selection in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft (Carolina Hurricanes), Jack Johnson (Faribault, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal on Saturday night as home against Quinnipiac University ... After the first weekend of NCAA action, University of Michigan junior defenseman Matt Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) leads the nation in scoring with six points (3-3), he was also named the CCHA Player of the Week for his efforts last weekend ... Sophomore forward Bryan Lerg (Livonia, Mich.) recorded one goal and three assists to help Michigan State defeat North Dakota and Wayne State en route to winning the Lefty McFadden Invitational in Dayton, Ohio

ABOUT THE NTDP:

Founded in 1997, USA Hockey's National Team Development Program was created to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and success in their future hockey careers. The program has been instrumental in capturing gold medals at the 2002 and 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championships and the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship. This past summer 15 NTDP alumni were selected in the NHL Entry Draft. In the seven years NTDP players have been eligible for the NHL draft, 107 players have been selected.

U.S. NATIONAL UNDER-17 TEAM PLAYER NOTES: Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) returns to the lineup on Friday night against Mahoning Valley ... Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) is currently tied as the NAHL's eighth leading goaltender in goals against average with a 2.36 mark in five games played

LAST WEEKEND: The U.S. National Under-17 Team had a pair of North American Hockey League victories last weekend at home against the Alpena Ice Diggers. Team USA earned their first weekend sweep on the season.
