U.S. National Team News Release
THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-17 Team will travel to Alpena, Mich., to take on the Alpena Ice Diggers (4-9-1) Friday (Oct. 28) and Saturday (Oct. 29) in a North American Hockey League. Game time is set for 7 o'clock (EDT) on both nights.
U.S. HEAD COACH RON ROLSTON: Ron Rolston is in his second season with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Rolston has amassed a career record with the NTDP of 49-19-8. He was an assistant coach in the collegiate ranks at Lake Superior State University, Clarkson University, Harvard University and Boston College prior to joining the NTDP.
U.S. HEAD COACH RON ROLSTON ON THIS WEEK: "We look to continue the momentum from the final game of the (NAHL) Showcase when we travel to Alpena. The Showcase was a good experience for our guys, because playing in four games in four days with travel involved can be grueling. I think we will have a good week of practice and continue to develop as a team."
SERIES RECORD: The U.S. National Under-17 Team owns a 2-0-0 all-time record against NAHL newcomer Alpena after 7-1 and 6-3 wins on Oct. 7 and 8.
NATIONAL TEAM DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ALUMNI UPDATE: University of Denver junior captain Matt Carle (Anchorage, Alaska) recorded a goal and three assists against fellow NTDP alumni and Anchorage, Alaska, native Jordan Pearce, as the ninth-ranked Pioneers topped the University of Notre Dame, 6-3, on Saturday, Oct. 22 ... Freshman goaltender Jeff Frazee (Burnsville, Minn.) turned aside 20 shots for the University of Minnesota as it topped the Mavericks of Minnesota State Mankato, 4-3, on Saturday, Oct. 22. ... The Ohio State University sophomore forward Tom Fritsche (Parma, Ohio) was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week. Fritsche had five points (2-3) in a series with Bowling Green State University last Thursday (Oct. 20) and Saturday (Oct. 22).
LAST WEEK: The U.S. National Under-17 Team participated in the 2005 NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn., and went 2-1-1 in four games. The only loss came to the two-time NAHL champion, Texas Tornados. Texas was the only team to win all four games of the Showcase.
UP NEXT: The U.S. National Under-17 Team will host the Mahoning Valley Phantoms Nov. 3 at 7 p.m., then travel to Piestany, Solvakia, for the Four Nations Tournament Nov. 6-14.
ABOUT THE NATIONAL TEAM DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
Founded in 1997, USA Hockey's National Team Development Program was created to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and success in their future hockey careers. Each year the 46 players selected for the program are divided into two standing teams - the U.S. National Under-18 Team and the U.S. National Under-17 Team. Located in Ann Arbor, Mich., the program has been instrumental in helping the United States capture gold medals at the 2002 and 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championships and the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship. This past summer, 15 NTDP alumni were selected in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. In the seven years NTDP players have been eligible for the draft, 107 players have been selected.
