BOARDMAN, Ohio - Emerson Etem (Long Beach, Calif.) notched two goals, including what proved to be the game-winner, as the U.S. National Under-17 Team topped the Mahoning Valley Phantoms, 4-2, here tonight at the Boardman Ice Zone.
Mahoning Valley jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Robert Harrison notched a power-play goal at 13:23 of the opening stanza. Team USA evened the score with just five seconds to play in the period. After Etem's shot was stopped by netminder Jordan Tibbett, the puck bounced off a Phantom defenseman and into the back of the net. Etem received credit for the goal as the last U.S. player to touch the puck.
Late in the second period, Team USA notched two goals within seven seconds of each other for a 3-1 advantage. After Jarred Tinordi (Millersville, Md.) put the U.S. ahead 2-1 at 19:27, Chase Balisy (Fullerton, Calif.) won the ensuing faceoff to Etem who took the puck from center ice, split the Mahoning Valley defenseman and put the puck past Tibbett to give Team USA a two-goal advantage at 19:34.
Austin Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) made it 4-1 at the 3:34 mark of the final frame, after he took a feed from Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) and put the puck past Tibbett from the bottom of the left faceoff circle. Alex Lippincott tipped Carl Nielsen's shot past goaltender Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) for a power-play marker at 6:56 to account for the 4-2 final.
Campbell made 19 saves to earn the victory.
Team USA returns to action against the Phantoms tomorrow night (October 25) at 7:15 p.m. ET at the Boardman Ice Zone.
