U.S. National Team News Release
MARQUETTE, Mich. - Five different players scored for Team USA as the U.S. National Under-17 Team posted a 5-3 victory over North American Hockey League North Division-foe Marquette here tonight at the Lakeview Arena. With the win, the U.S. squad improved to 2-0-0-1, while the Rangers were handed their second loss of the season and now stand at 3-0-0-2.
"It was a good game, especially for our first one on the road," said Ron Rolston, head coach for Team USA. "We were a little slow early on, but as the game continued, we took over the play for the most part. The focus now is getting better every day as a group and I saw some definite improvements from the last time we played."
The Rangers scored the only goal of the opening period, just 1:02 into the game, to take an early 1-0 lead.
Team USA came back in the second frame, using a trio of tallies to take a 3-1 advantage. Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) was first to score for the Americans, putting one in from the left post at 3:57. Kyle Palmieri (Smithtown, N.Y.) gave Team USA its first lead of the game at 6:53 during a U.S. power play, as he skated up the length of the ice along the left boards and knocked the puck into the net despite being tied up by multiple Marquette players. The United States went up 3-1 at the 14:00 mark, with Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y.) putting a rebound top shelf during a two-man advantage.
Marquette added a goal with 1:12 remaining in the second stanza to make the score 3-2 heading into the final frame.
Team USA again used the power play to extend its lead to 4-2 early in the third period. Nick Mattson (Chanhassen, Minn.) took a shot from the right point that was tipped in by A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) at 3:40. Nic Weight netted his second tally of the outing for the Rangers off the faceoff at 6:44 during a Marquette power play to cut the U.S. lead back to a single goal.
The U.S. squad closed out scoring with 1:43 left in the game on a Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.) goal to account for the 5-3 final.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team returns to action tomorrow night (Sept. 29) in the second game of the series with Marquette at 7:30 p.m. EDT at the Lakeview Arena.
