Minot Skyrockets News Release
Butte, MT - February 7, 2007 - Two of the Minot Skyrockets competed in the 23rd Annual CBA All-Star Classic in Butte, Montana yesterday. Forward Ray Cunningham and Guard Desmond Ferguson played for the American Conference Team, coached by Michael Ray Richardson of the Albany Patroons.
The evening started with a Slam Dunk Contest featuring four players, including Minot's Ray Cunningham. Hometown favorite Anthony Richardson of the Butte Daredevils won the competition with a Dr. J jam worth "50" points. Carl Edwards of the Indiana Alley Cats took second, and Ray Cunningham came in at third.
Next up was the Long Distance Shootout. Eight of the leagues top scorers, including Minot's Desmond Ferguson, competed from the 3-point line to see who was the best shooter. Albany's Jamario Moon, Ferguson, and Butte's David Bell all made it into the finals of the Shootout. Moon went first in the final round but came out with only 10 points. Ferguson shot next and racked up 15 points, but it was the hometown favorite who once again grabbed the spotlight. David Bell hit 17 points to win the Long Distance Shootout. This was the third consecutive year that the hometown players captured both skill competitions at the All-Star Classic.
Finally, both teams suited up in front of 3,283 fans to display their talents and basketball prowess. The American Conference was led by Erick Barkley (Indiana Alley Cats) who had 25 points and hit a 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds left in regulation to put the game into overtime. Ray Cunningham had 14 points and 8 rebounds in the game, and Desmond Ferguson put 9 points on the board. Ralph Holmes (Yakama) and the National Conference finished the night on top 134-131. Holmes pulled out a double-double (25 points, 13 rebounds) and walked away with MVP honors.
"Butte was a great host city and a great facility for the All-Star Game. We were very excited to come out here, and it was nice to meet all the players, coaches and owners. I think we all put on a good show and had a lot of fun," said Ray Cunningham.
The Minot Skyrockets will be playing their next game in Great Falls, Montana on Thursday, February 8th at 7:05 pm Mountain Time. The Skyrockets are currently in second place in the American Conference and are enjoying a 8-0 winning streak. They will match up against the Great Falls Explorers who are currently in second place in the National Conference.
