Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
BURLINGTON, IA - The Burlington Bees scored six two-out runs in the first two innings and defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-4 Monday night at Community Field. The win ended Wisconsin's five game winning streak. Danny Duffy and Juan Abreau combined for 11 strikeouts and held off the Rattler hitters after being given the early lead.
The Bees (26-38) jumped on Timber Rattler starting pitcher Phillippe Aumont for four two out runs in the bottom of the first inning. Adrian Ortiz was at third with no outs after a single, stolen base, and a balk. He was still there with two outs, but Jason Taylor launched a 2-2 pitch out of the stadium for a two-run homer.
Back-to-back singles by Clint Robinson and Nick Van Stratten put two more runners on base in the first. RBI hits by Zach Evangelho and Juan Rivera plated the other two Burlington run in the first.
The Rattlers (27-31) came back with a pair of two-out runs in the top of the second. Denny Almonte's two-run double drove in Ron Garth and Joe Dunigan to make the score 4-2.
Burlington got to Aumont for two more two-out runs in the bottom of the second. He walked two batters with two outs. Then, Robinson doubled to drive in both free passes for a 6-2 Burlington lead.
Wisconsin relievers Jake Wild, Ryan Moorer, and Jose Escalona kept the Bees off the scoreboard for the rest of the game and gave the offense a chance to get back into the game.
But, they would not touch Duffy again. The lefty did not allow another hit after the Almonte double, did not walk a batter, and struck out eight.
The Rattlers fared a little better against reliever Juan Abreu. Almonte doubled in another run in the seventh inning. Wisconsin tacked on a run in the top of the ninth on a RBI grounder by Gavin Dickey, but they would get no closer than the 6-4 score.
Burlington ended a streak of their own with the win. They had lost four straight heading into Monday's action.
Game two of the series is Tuesday night. Donnie Hume (5-1, 2.06) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Eduardo Paulino (2-3, 4.10) is set to start for the Bees. Game time is 6:30pm.
