Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, WI - April 13, 2011. The Rafters announced today that they have added two additional UC-Riverside players to the 2011 roster. Joining UC-Riverside teammates Bart Steponovich and AJ Beckley on the Rafters are second baseman Eddie Young and right-handed pitcher Joie Dunyon.
IF-Eddie Young, 5'10", 185 lbs (Bats: L Throws: R) Sophomore, UC-Riverside
Young was drafted out of high school by the Chicago White Sox in the 33rd Round of the 2008 MLB Draft. This season Young has appeared in 23 games for the Highlanders, making 22 starts. He currently has a .253 batting average (21-for-83) with 4 doubles, 5 RBI and 10 runs scored. He has also displayed his tremendous speed by going a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts.
Last year, Young started 38 of the 44 games he appeared in and finished his season with a .270 batting average (34-for-126). He clubbed 9 doubles and 1 triple while driving in 26 runs and scoring 13. He also walked 20 times on the season, good for fifth on the team, which aided his .362 on-base percentage. Young also recorded six multiple hit games and six multi-RBI games during his 2010 campaign.
Young was a four-year letter winner in baseball at Christian High School in El Cajon, California, where he helped his team win the 2007 Central League Championships. He was named All-League and All-CIF as a sophomore, which was only the beginning of the honors he received during high school. He was named Central League Player of the Year, All-League, All-CIF, and All-State as a junior and named All-League, All-CIF, All-State, and Division 4 Player of the Year as a senior.
Young comes from a very athletic family, as his uncle Mark played baseball at UC-Riverside and was a 16th Round MLB draft choice of the Toronto Blue Jays where he played five seasons in the minor leagues. His uncles Donnie and Ronnie also played in the minor leagues for the Cleveland Indians. Young is a native of El Cajon, California.
RHP-Joie Dunyon, 6'1", 195 lbs (Bats: R Throws: R) RS Freshman, UC-Riverside
Dunyon is appearing in his first action for the Highlanders this spring, after receiving a redshirt last season. He has made 3 appearances out of the bullpen this spring, spanning four innings, and has only allowed one hit while recording three strikeouts against no walks.
Dunyon was a three-year letter winner in baseball, three-year letter winner in football, and two-year letter winner in soccer at St. John Bosco High School in California. He was named First-Team All-League in baseball in 2008 and football in 2009, while also being named his school's 2008 baseball team MVP and 2008-2009 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Dunyon is from Long Beach, California and is majoring in pre-business at UC-Riverside.
