
Two Miners earn Player of the Week honors

MESA, ARIZONA -The Golden Baseball League announced today that Mesa Miners first baseman Paul Powell and pitcher Grant Williams have received the honor of players of the week for the Arizona Division. They join outfielder Caleb Maher and second baseman Digz Edwards who have also won the award for the Miners.
The 25-year old Powell, out of Oklahoma State University, went 12 for 28 as he hit .429 while leading the league in home runs with 2, second in runs with 7 and doubles with 2, and had a slugging average of .750 for the week. Powell also had a 10-game hit streak.
Williams, a 25 year-old righty, was the only GBL pitcher to have a record of 2-0 last week and had a complete game win over the San Diego Surf Dawgs giving up just a single run, he went on to pitch 8 innings in his next start beating the Japan Samurai Bears. For the week he had 17 innings pitched, 15 strikeouts, and only walked 5 as he raised his overall record to 6-1 and lowered his E.R.A. to 2.75 for the season.
Other honors included Fullerton Flyer's third baseman Sean Walsh who was named California Division player of the week, and Chico Outlaw's pitcher Grant Gregg who was named California Division pitcher of the week.

The Miners will play a 90-game schedule which features 54 home games played at HoHoKam Park in Mesa. The Golden Baseball League season begins in May and concludes with the playoffs in September. The inaugural season of the Golden Baseball League will include charter cities in Arizona (Mesa, Surprise, Yuma) and California (San Diego, Chico, Fullerton, Long Beach) along with the Japan Samurai Bears. Each team will have a 24-man roster. Players will be recruited from throughout the United States, including former major leaguers working their way back up through the minors, some of college baseball's finest players who missed being drafted, and cuts from Major League Baseball's spring training roster trimming.
