
Miners sweep doubleheader from Flyers

MESA, ARIZONA -The Mesa Miners improved their record to 39-30 and took sole position of first place in the Arizona Division by winning both games of a doubleheader against the Fullerton Flyers (25-42) at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.
Mesa starter in game one was Manny Ayala (11-2) who became the Golden Baseball League's first 11-game winner as Mesa beat Fullerton 2-1 in nine innings of a seven inning game. Ayala pitched a nine inning complete game giving up one run (none earned) on four hits. He also walked none and struck out nine batters. The Flyers scored first with an RBI single by Terrance McClain in the second inning. The Miners came right back with a run of their own in the second with an RBI single by Kevin Reinking. The game remained tied at 1-1 until the ninth inning when Caleb Maher hit a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Mesa pitching coach and former major league pitcher Mike Hartley made his Miners debut in game two. Hartley went 4.2 innings giving up four runs on eight hits. Mesa went up 2-0 in the third inning with a 2-run home run by Marcus Jensen. Fullerton scored four times in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. The Miners closed the gap to 4-3 with an RBI single by Cleatus Davidson in the bottom of the fifth inning. Down 4-3 in the last inning, the Miners tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI groundout by Adam Bonner and then won the game when Fullerton reliever Ryan Olson threw a wild pitch. Tim Saunders (1-0) made his Miners and professional debut and won the game in relief.

The Miners will play a 90-game schedule which features 54 home games played at HoHoKam Park in Mesa. The Golden Baseball League season begins in May and concludes with the playoffs in September. The Golden Baseball League, presented by Safeway Inc., is a professional baseball league operating under a single-entity ownership model. The inaugural season of the Golden Baseball League will include charter cities in Arizona (Mesa, Surprise, Yuma) and California (San Diego, Chico, Fullerton, Long Beach) along with the Japan Samurai Bears. Each team will have a 24-man roster. Players will be recruited from throughout the United States, including former major leaguers working their way back up through the minors, some of college baseball's finest players who missed being drafted, and cuts from Major League Baseball's spring training roster trimming.
