Two In A Row For Surf Dawgs as Canseco makes debut
July 4, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
It was a packed house at Nettleton Stadium tonight as 4,501 people packed the stadium to its capacity to see the newest member of the Surf Dawgs, Jose Canseco. There was a constant buzz around not only the stadium but also the town of Chico in anticipation of the former MLB slugger. The Surf Dawgs beat the Outlaws 4-3 for their second win in a row and Jose Canseco was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and was hit by a pitch. It was the largest crowd in Nettleton Stadium history and those left without tickets watched from the train tracks and building rooftops behind the wall in right-center field.
Canseco received boo's and applause from the Chico fans in his first at bat in the second inning as he approached the plate. Unfortunately for Canseco it would be his first of three strikeouts but that didn't stop San Diego from scoring in the second. After Canseco struck out, Richard Quihuis-Bell singled up the middle. He was moved to second on a Matt Maloney ground out and with two outs Victor Roldan came through and singled down the right field line to score Quihuis-Bell. After two it was 1-0 Surf Dawgs.
In the top of the third the long ball would once again help the Surf Dawgs. After Seth Pietsch singled, Goodman hit a home run over the right field fence, his second in as many days, to make it 3-0 San Diego.
Starting pitcher Steve Smyth (1-0) was brilliant all evening, throwing 7 1/3 innings allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Smyth wouldn't allow a Chico run to cross the plate until the fourth inning. Craig Kuzmic hit a solo shot off of Smyth to make it 3-1 Dawgs.
San Diego would add one more in the fifth and it would prove to be a very crucial. Pietsch once again led off with a single and Goodman walked. After Nick Guerra flew out, a pitch struck Canseco and the bases were loaded. Quihuis-Bell hit a sacrifice fly to score Pietsch and it was 4-1.
Smyth would allow two more in the eighth but E.J. Shanks would come in and get out of the jam to maintain the 4-3 lead. Josh Rummonds pitched a nearly perfect ninth for his fifth save of the year.
The Surf Dawgs (11-20) will take their recent success into Reno where they will duel with the first-place Silver Sox (20-11). It will be the first ever meeting between the two teams. Chris George (0-4) will look for his first win of 2006 for the Surf Dawgs.
