San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
Make it three in a row for the Surf Dawgs as they beat the Silver Sox 11-10 in 10 innings at Peccole Park in Reno today before 1,503 spectators. After putting up eight runs in the first frame, San Diego allowed Reno to fight their way back to tie it in the ninth but won it in the tenth on a Matt Maloney single. E.J. Shanks (4-1) picked up the win for San Diego in relief.
The Surf Dawgs offense would explode in the first inning to give starting pitcher Chris George a comfortable lead to work with. Matthew Connolly started the game with a walk and then Tony Garcia and Adam Mandel both singled to load the bases. Scott Goodman reached on an error by the shortstop and Connolly would score to make it 1-0 San Diego. With the bases still loaded, Nick Guerra hit a double that would clear the bases and it was 4-0.
Richard Quihuis-Bell would single and there were two on for Matt Maloney. Maloney, who was 4-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored, hit into a fielder's choice and Guerra scored to make it 5-0. Still with no outs, Victor Roldan smacked a triple to drive in Quihuis-Bell and Maloney and it was 7-0. Johnny Day made the first out of the inning and then it was back to the top of the order for Connolly, who singled in Roldan. After half an inning it was 8-0 Surf Dawgs.
The Silver Sox would slowly claw their way back into the game beginning in the second inning. Carlos Madrid hit a two-run home run to get Reno on the board to make it 8-2 Dawgs.
San Diego would add one run in both the fourth and the sixth innings but Reno would make it close, scoring two in the fourth, three in the sixth, and one in the seventh. Going into the bottom of the ninth inning it was 10-8 Surf Dawgs.
Brent Pourciau who came on in relief of Joe Safken in the seventh and pitched a perfect eighth, got the first two outs in the ninth but then ran into some trouble. After a walk to Mike Done, he hit Philip Grau to put two on with two out for Richard Giannotti. E.J. Shanks was then summoned to close it down. Shanks gave up a double to Giannotti that would score both Done and Grau and the game was tied.
Matt Maloney would prove to be the hero in this one. After Scott Goodman doubled to lead off the tenth, both Guerra and Quihuis-Bell were retired and that left it up to Maloney. Maloney came up big and hit a single through the left side to score Goodman, who had advanced to third on the Quihuis-Bell ground out, to give San Diego the 11-10 lead. Shanks would pitch a perfect tenth to seal the victory.
The 11 runs tie a season-high and the 19 hits sets a new season-high for San Diego. Jake Meyer will make his first start for the Surf Dawgs (12-20) tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. PT. The Silver Sox (20-11) will send out Carlos Chavez (1-0) for his third start of the season.
