Cape Cod Frenzy News Release
Rockville, Maryland: The Cape Cod Frenzy found themselves down by five points against the Maryland Nighthawks with just 22 seconds remaining in the 'Guinness Book of World Records' game on Sunday. Frenzy forward Scott Hazelton drilled a 35 foot three pointer to cut the lead to two at 126-124 and the Frenzy immediately fouled Nighthawk guard Randy 'White Chocolate' Gill. Gill sank both free throws to give the home team a four point lead. Hazelton took the inbounds and calmly pulled a halfcourt jumpshot with hit nothing but net for FOUR POINTS and a tie game at 128-128 with a mere 5.1 seconds left! The home crowd, a sellout, practically fell out of the their seats after the shot. After a Maryland timeout, Hugh Jones (aka Baby Shaq from And1) took the ball and launched a wheeling, spinning heave from halfcourt....which swished the net and the Nighthawks avoided overtime for a 132-128 victory!
The unbelievable finish, which concludes the ABA regular season, was a fitting end for a game with a crazy start. Maryland achieved a Guinness Book world record by starting the tallest lineup in the history of basketball. The lineup included 7'9 Sun Ming Ming, 7'7 former Washington Bullet Georghe Mureson, two 7'0 players, and 6'8 Barry Mitchell.
After all of the ceremony prior to the tip off, the Frenzy immediately jumped out to a 17-4 lead before the Nighthawks began inserting their regular players. Maryland clawed back to make the game close. Frenzy All Star forward Rob Sanders was unstoppable as he scored on a variety of moves and slams in the first half. The Frenzy went into halftime with a 62-55 lead. In the second half the Nighthawks rallied behind the crowd to claim a lead as big as seven in the fourth quarter before the dramatic finish.
The Frenzy were led by Sanders with 34 points and 8 rebounds and Scott Hazelton with 20 points. Maryland's Randy Gill scored 22, Hugh Jones 25, and Drew Washington 23.
Sunday's game followed a previous match up between the two teams on Saturday night, where the Nighthawks edged the Frenzy 119-118.
