Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs manager Patrick Osborn has announced the first official signings for the 2011 roster. Osborn, in his first season as Crabs skipper, is looking to build on an all time franchise high 82-57 record in 2010, which included the Crabs second playoff berth and the best pitching in the Atlantic League. Returning pitchers Jim Ed Warden (closer) and Bryan Dumesnil (reliever) are the first to ink a deal.

11-year veteran Jim Ed Warden will likely assume the closer duties to begin the 2011 season as he did for the Blue Crabs in '10. The 6-7, hard throwing-right hander was an intimidating presence throughout the Atlantic League just a season ago. Warden had 30 saves in his 58 appearances with an ERA of just 2.61. Warden was a former teammate of newly appointed Blue Crabs manager Patrick Osborn in the Cleveland organization, and was selected in the sixth round of the 2001 draft by the Indians and has additional Triple-A experience with both Cleveland the Washington Nationals, and the New York Mets organizations. Warden has racked up 76 saves in his professional career.

The lefty middle-reliever Dumesnil returns to the Blue Crabs after going 2-3 with a 5.03 ERA in 43 innings pitched last year. Dumesnil spent the majority of the 2009 season with the Atlanta Braves organization at Double-A Mississippi, before finishing the season with Double-A New Hampshire (Toronto Blue Jays) and Quebec of the Can-Am League. After also pitching out of the Quebec bullpen in 2006 and 2007, Dumesnil spent most of the previous three seasons in Atlanta's system before coming to Southern Maryland. Dumesnil debuted as a professional in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system in 2002, and also spent two years in the Baltimore Orioles system in 2004 and 2005. A native of Nanaimo, British Columbia, he pitched for the Canadian National Team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Entering his tenth professional season, Dumesnil has pitched 241 innings and has 17 professional saves.

Additional signings will be announced by the team throughout the spring, leading up to Opening Day on Friday, April 29 at Regency Furniture Stadium against the Somerset Patriots.

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, and play at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland. The 2011 season is presented by the Civista Health Foundation. The franchise is entering its fourth season in the spring of 2011, coming off the team's second playoff appearance in 2010.
