San Angelo Colts News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts stranded numerous early opportunities to take the lead, and the Amarillo Dillas made the most of their opportunities, with a four-run third and an eight-run fifth to beat up the Colts 13-1 and take the rain-shortened best-of-three series 2-1 from San Angelo.
Tyrone Pendergrass started the game with an infield single off Ronald Lowe (5-0), and he moved to second on an error by second baseman Josh Ashton. But Jose Torres struck out, Pendergrass was caught stealing third, and Jason Landreth struck out to end the inning.
In the second, the Colts (34-23) had the bases loaded with just one out, but Charley Belew popped out to short and Pendergrass grounded out, and in the third, with the bases loaded and no outs, Andres Rodriguez, Aaron Cone, and Bryan Frichter all struck out.
After Luke Massetti (4-4) held Amarillo (35-27) hitless through the first two innings, the Dillas made the Colts pay for their missed chances in the third. Justin Wenger led off with a home run, and then three straight singles, a hit by pitch, and three straight singles gave Amarillo a 4-0 lead.
The Colts got their lone run in the top of the fourth when Pendergrass scored on the second error of the night by shortstop Danny Bravo.
Amarillo broke it open in the fifth with an eight-spot off Massetti and reliever Matt Greanead. Keith Brachold began the frame with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Gary Schneidmiller. After a fielder's choice moved Schneidmiller to second, A.J. Johnson hit an RBI single to left to knock out the San Angelo starter. Greanead allowed the first seven batters he faced to reach on six hits and a hit batsman, including a grand slam by Jonathan Reynoso.
San Angelo worked Lowe hard, forcing him out after five innings, but he only allowed four hits and the unearned run while striking out eight Colts. The Colts got four hits off relievers Josh Smith and Eric Smith, including two more hits from Pendergrass, who was 3-for-5, and one from Joe Rhomberg, who was 3-for-5 with two doubles, making his first series of the year a successful one, going 7-for-15 with four doubles and an RBI.
Miliade Venas and Chris Weast went the final two innings without allowing a run for San Angelo, who has now lost two straight after a season-high six-game winning streak.
The Colts now travel to Laredo for a three-game set beginning at 7:30 p.m. CT on Monday, July 21. The Colts return home on Thursday, July 24 to begin a 10-game, nine-day homestand, starting with a Miller Lite "Thirsty Thursday," when 16 oz. bottles of beer are just $2.
