Arkansas Diamonds News Release
The Arkansas Twisters looked unstoppable for one play, and Quad City overcame a slow start to beat Arkansas 54-23 in front of more than 8700 at Alltel Arena.
Arkansas scored on its first play from scrimmage when Travis Motley connected with Kevin Williams for a 36 yards touchdown. The Twisters got the ball back after Quad City turned it over on fourth down, but Motley fumbled the ball in his own endzone, and Flint Fleming recovered the fumble for a touchdown to tie the game at 7.
Quad City pulled away in the second quarter. Offensive Player of the Game Ronnie Gordon threw two touchdown passes in the quarter, and the Steamwheelers led 24-10 at halftime.
Quad City kept scoring in the second half, as Arkansas struggled on offense. Gordon threw four second half touchdowns, and Jeff Hewitt finished with three touchdown catches to lead the Steamwheelers offensive attack. Ironman of the Game Tim Dodge finished with a touchdown catch and an interception. Defensive specialist Matt Forbes intercepted two passes to bring his team leading total to seven and earned him Defensive Player of the Game honors. Gordon finished with five touchdown passes, and he ran for another.
Ted Alford had a 55 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Twisters hit the road to face Bossier City next Friday.
