Arkansas Diamonds News Release

The Arkansas Twisters were having fun and looked victorious with two minutes left in their game against Memphis. But the Explorers scored two touchdowns and converted a busted two point conversion in the final :60 seconds to give Arkansas it's fifth straight loss, 37-35.

Memphis led early in the game when Jake Knott found Ryan Karr in the endzone to put Memphis up 10-0. But Arkansas came back with a long drive capped by a Kevin Williams 1 yard touchdown run. Robert Kilow extended the Explorers lead with a five yard touchdown run to give Memphis a 16-7 lead. The Twisters offense looked like it needed a jump start when they got it from Kevin Williams. After Marc Gill's field goal attempt was blocked, Williams picked up the loose ball and found Prince Williams open for a first down. Kevin Williams later ran the ball for his second rushing touchdown of the night, and Arkansas trailed 16-14 at the halftime.

Arkansas grabbed control of the game in the second half when Darnell Small scored from five yards out to give the Twisters their first lead of the night. Kevin Williams later found Ted Alford on a six yard pass play to give Arkansas a 28-16 lead.

Memphis began its comeback when Kevin Prentiss caught a touchdown pass from backup quarterback Brian Jones to pull Memphis within five.

The Twisters looked like they sealed the deal when Jones fumbled the center to quarterback exchange and newly signed Arthur Abston picked it up and won the 20 yard foot race to the endzone to give Arkansas a 35-23 lead with just over two minute left in the game.

Memphis answered when Prentiss caught a short pass from Jones, but the Explorers missed the extra point to trail 35-29. The turning point came when Memphis attempted and recovered an on-side kick with :59 left on the clock. Memphis drove down field, and Jones found Robert Kilow for the game tying touchdown. Ryan Karr fumbled the point after snap, and he was able to run into the endzone for a two point conversion that gave Memphis a 37-35 lead.

The Twisters was in position to win the game after Kevin Williams completed two passes and called time out with :01 left on the clock and Arkansas at the Explorers' 20 yard line. Marc Gill's game winning field goal attempt was blocked and Memphis (3-3) beat Arkansas for the first time ever.

Kevin Williams completed 12 of 20 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown. He also had two rushing touchdowns. Brian Jones completed 9 of 10 passes for Memphis for 103 yards and three touchdowns in relief. Memphis blocked three Arkansas field goals including the potential game winner with no time left on the clock.

The Twisters (1-5) return to Alltel Arena next Saturday to face rival Tulsa. PGA golfer John Daly is appearing to help out the Make-A-Wish-Foundation.
