Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
[HUNTSVILLE, AL] â Shaun Aebig's goal at 2:39 of overtime lifted the Winston-Salem Polar Twins over the Huntsville Havoc 4-3 in Southern Professional Hockey League action at Von Braun Civic Center Thursday night.
It was the first time this season the Polar Twins have been able to win two straight. Like Tuesday night in Macon, Winston-Salem found themselves down 3-0 before climbing back for the victory.
Doug Merrell put the Havoc up 1-0 at 8:59 of the first period with assists being credited to Steve Howard and Mike Degurse. Huntsville added to that lead halfway through the second on Derek McKinlay's fifth goal of the season for a 2-0 game.
Josh Liebenow's goal only 35 seconds into the third gave Huntsville a commanding 3-0 lead. But Bryan Wells' squad still had a few tricks up their sleeves.
Polar Twins' defenseman Mike Walling made it a two goal game at 18:43 of the third with his first goal of the season. With time running out and still down two goals, Wells pulled goaltender Jomar Cruz in favor of the extra attacker. With 53 seconds remaining in the period, Brett Cross pulled the Twins within one at 3-2. Then, with only ten seconds left, Chester Gallant netted an unassisted goal to tie the game 3-3 and send it into overtime.
In the extra session, Aebig netted his team-leading 14th goal of the season at 2:39 to give the Polar Twins the victory.
Said Polar Twins Head Coach Bryan Wells, "We got the one goal late in the third and were able to put in two more with the goalie pulled to send it to overtime. In overtime Aebig got a chance and buried it. This was a huge win for us and it will give us momentum going into our next two games."
The Polar Twins play two more games on the road, stopping in Asheville on Friday and Columbus on Saturday, before returning home for two early games next week. On Monday, catch the Twins as they battle the Fayetteville FireAntz at 1:00 p.m. All tickets are $5 for that game and parking is free. Then on Tuesday, the Macon Trax visit LJVM Coliseum Annex for a 10:00 a.m. puck drop.
