Boston Lobsters News Release
July 26, SPRINGFIELD, MO-After an unusual delay of over three hours caused by the host team, the Lobsters stunned the WTT League leading Lasers in Springfield, MO in a match that lasted into the early hours of the next day. The 21-20 win over the Lasers capped off a great finish to the 2006 Boston Lobsters' season with back to back victories over both the Eastern and Western Conference leaders.
In the opening set (mixed doubles), Andrea Vanc and Alex Vlaski (Lasers) edged Amir Hadad and Nicole Pratt (Lobsters) in the final point of tiebreaker to win 5-4(4).
In women's singles, Nicole Pratt and Andrea Vanc traded first the two games with service breaks before going back on serve. Pratt broke again then held to go up 4-2. She then closed out her match as she has consistently done during the season with another service break to win 5-3 and put Boston up 9-8.
Amir Hadad was up next against Springfield's Nick Monroe. The Lasers broke Boston at 2-all and followed up with a service hold to wrestle the lead in the set and the match. A Hadad hold and a break at love put the Lobsters back on top 13-12 and set up the set-deciding tiebreak. Monroe struck back to win the breaker 5-3 and the Lobsters and Lasers headed into halftime deadlocked at 13-all.
When play resumed, Pratt and Kristen Schlukebir started things off for Boston with a service break against Victoria Azarenka and Vanc. Lasers lunged back to win the set 5-2 and the Lobsters' opponents once again led the match by a score of 18-15.
So the Lobsters fate this night would come down to the final set of men's doubles in their final match of the 2006 season. Hadad and Thomas Blake proved up to the challenge for their second consecutive pairing as they upended Monroe and Vlaski 5-2. Blake and Hadad won a crucial 3-all point at 2-1 to take the lead and go on to ultimately win the match for Boston in their second consecutive Supertiebreak by a score of 7-2.
Tonight's 21-20 win gave the Lobsters a pair of victories to end the season. Earlier this week, the team upset Eastern division leading Delaware by the same final score in a Supertiebreaker Overtime at Harvard's Bright Arena. The Lasers had been the Western division leaders and may now be relegated to a playoff match for a final four berth (depending on results of other matches being played tonight).
Thank you to all of our sponsors, partners, fans and supporters for making the 2006 Boston Lobsters season such a great success. Next summer promises to bring even more excitement for the Lobsters.
