Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA â The Ottawa Renegades were rewarded once again for last Friday night's victory over the Calgary Stampeders. On Tuesday, defensive end/tackle John Turntine was named the Rogers CFL Lineman of the Week, four days after the Renegades defeated the Stamps 26-24.
Turntine, a rookie defensive end out of Texas Christian University, had five defensive tackles â two of which were for loss â as well as a pass knockdown and a quarterback sack in the Ottawa win. The 6-foot-1, 278-pound native of Greenwood, Mississippi was an extremely effective starter for the Renegades, who held Calgary to only 59 yards rushing on the night. He got the nod over Edmonton's Rashad Jeanty (second runner-up) and Tyrone Williams of the B.C. Lions (first runner-up).
"Turntine has one of the quickest first steps in the league and when he sees movement, he explodes," said league judge, Bob Krouse. "He was upfield, disrupting running plays before they could get underway. He collapsed the pocker and either sacked the quarterback or batted the ball down. Turntine was a force!"
Renegades head coach Joe Paopao said Turntine had a "five-star kind of game. He was very solid for us."
Turntine is the second Renegades defensive lineman to earn league honours this season. Jerome Haywood has twice received weekly recognition and was also named the CFL's lineman of the month for July.
