CFL names Players of the Week
Published on September 21, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
Offensive Player of the Week
RB â Charles Roberts #1
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Highlights
Roberts rushed for 154 yards on 30 carries (5.1/carry) and three (3) touchdowns. He also had four (4) pass receptions for 45 yards.
Game Notes:
Roberts had great bursts of speed, the longest at 32 yards, but it was a two (2) yard run that was truly unbelievable. He took the ball, hit a wall, squirmed, rolled and pushed, refusing to be denied on that play till he scored the touchdown. Roberts has great balance and he never stops pivoting, sidestepping or powering through until the whistle is blown.
Roberts' increased incorporation into the offence is one of the reasons for the resurgence of the Blue Bombers.
1st Runner Up: Casey Printers #1, BC Lions
2nd Runner Up: Kenton Keith #28, Saskatchewan Roughriders
Judge: Bob Krouse
Defensive Player of the Week
S â Orlondo Steinauer #21
Toronto Argonauts
Highlights
This week, Steinauer had the League's highest number of individual tackles with nine (9). He sacked the punter for a loss of 19 yards and had one (1) interception which he returned 49 yards for a touchdown.
Game Notes:
Steinauer is smart and instinctive. He plays deep enough to see the field and is probably at his best in zone schemes where he is free to go to the ball. He is an aggressive tackler, who is not afraid to put his nose into the running backs.
Steinauer is a team player; he was 70 yards downfield throwing the last block to enable Arland Bruce to return the punt for a touchdown.
1st Runner Up: Eric Carter #2, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
2nd Runner Up: Eddie Davis #29, Saskatchewan Roughriders
Judge: Bob Krouse
Lineman of the Week
DT â John Turntine #91
Ottawa Renegades
Highlights
Turntine had five (5) individual tackles, two (2) of which were for losses, one (1) pass knockdown and a quarterback sack.
Game Notes:
Turntine has one of the quickest first steps in the league, as when he sees movement, he explodes. He was upfield disrupting running plays before they could get underway. He collapsed the pocket and either sacked the quarterback or batted the ball down.
Turntine was a force!
1st Runner Up: Tyrone Williams #96, BC Lions
2nd Runner Up: Rashad Jeanty #97, Edmonton Eskimos
Judge: Bob Krouse
Special Teams Player of the Week
WR â Keith Stokes #3
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Highlights
Stokes had six (6) punt returns for 46 yards and four (4) kick off returns for 172 yards; one for a touchdown. This was the first kickoff return for a touchdown this season.
Game Notes:
There were many outstanding individual Special Teams performances this week - Troy Westwood, Winnipeg (five [5] field goals); Duncan O'Mahony, B.C. (five [5] field goals); Clint Greathouse, Calgary (five [5] field goals); Sandro Sciortino, Ottawa (four [4] field goals, including the game winner) and Arlan Bruce, Toronto (174 return yards and one [1] touchdown).
But there can only be three stars and they are Aaron Lockett, B.C. (232 returned yards) for second runner up, Paul McCallum, Saskatchewan (six [6] field goals including a game winner) and first place star is Keith Stokes, Winnipeg (218 returned yards and a touchdown).
1st Runner Up: Paul McCallum #4, Saskatchewan Roughriders
2nd Runner Up: Aaron Lockett #84, BC Lions
Judge: Bob Krouse
