ROSEMONT - The Bandits celebrated "Christmas in July" in the only way possible Friday night at Parkway Bank Sports Complex. They gave the Cleveland Comets coal for Christmas en route to a rain-shortened 10-0 win.
Right-hander Shelby Turnier turned in a dominant outing to earn her fifth victory of the season. The third-year standout cruised through four innings of work and surrendered just one hit while striking out seven.
The Bandits jumped on the board early and after behind timely hitting and a early defensive miscue by Cleveland right-hander Devin Brown. The rookie airmailed a throw home to allow a pair of Bandits baserunners to cross the plate in the opening frame. Productive at-bats from veteran designated player Stacy May-Johnson and rookie third baseman Courtney Gano extended the lead to 4-0.
RBI base knocks from shortstop Delaney Spaulding and second baseman Emily Carosone brought home three more runs. May-Johnson later delivered a double off the right-field wall to make it an 9-0 ballgame.
After a brief rain delay, Brenna Moss tacked on a run-scoring single to put the Bandits in double figures. It marked their eighth time scoring 10 or more runs in a game during the 2018 season.
Ally Carda sealed the win after the second-year right-hander tossed a scoreless fifth frame.
Brown suffered the loss for the Comets and fell to 3-12 on the season.
The Bandits will be back in action at 6 p.m. Thursday as they begin a three-game series against the league-leading USSSA Pride at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida.
