Turner Records 17 Saves in Losing Effort for Bayhawks

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Attackman Matt Danowski totaled six points, including four in the final three minutes, while goalie Adam Ghitelman recorded 20 saves as the expansion Charlotte Hounds stunned the Major League Lacrosse-leading Chesapeake Bayhawks, 13-12, much to the delight of a raucous crowd at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
Goalie Kip Turner registered 17 saves in a losing effort for Chesapeake, which had a five-game winning streak snapped. Attackman John Grant Jr. joined midfielders Steven Brooks and Michael Kimmel in totaling three points apiece for the Bayhawks, who remain in first place with a 7-2 record.
It was U.S. Army Night at Memorial Stadium and Charlotte attackman Jeremy Boltus, a West Point graduate and second Lieutenant, highlighted pregame festivities by swearing in a large contingent of new recruits. Boltus then led the Hounds onto the field carrying an American flag.
All that emotion carried over into the game as Charlotte jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but attackman-midfielder Ben Rubeor led a 4-1 run that gave Chesapeake a one-goal lead after the first quarter. However, a power play goal by former Bayhawk Brian Carroll capped a 3-1 second quarter that gave the Hounds a 6-5 lead at halftime.
Chesapeake seemed to take control by outscoring Charlotte 4-0 in the third period with Grant capping the run with a 2-point goal with just four seconds remaining to give the visitors a 9-6 advantage. Grant scored again unassisted on a strong inside move to open the fourth stanza and increase the lead to 10-6, but Boltus contributed a goal and assist as the home team answered with three straight goals to get within one.
It appeared Chesapeake would survive the inspired effort by Charlotte when Kimmel fired in a 2-pointer with 5:43 remaining. However, it was all Danowski from there on out as the former Duke All-American willed his team to victory with three goals in the final 2:49.
Back-to-back unassisted goals by Danowski got Charlotte within one at 12-11 with 1:25 to go. Chesapeake won the ensuing face-off, but lost possession without getting off a shot. That gave the host Hounds one last shot and a pushing penalty on Jeff Reynolds in transition proved costly.
Charlotte gained a man advantage with 32.3 seconds left and Danowski came through in the clutch, rocketing a 2-point shot from the top of the arc through the legs of Turner and into the back of the net to put the Hounds ahead 13-12. The Bayhawks won the ensuing face-off, but midfielder Kyle Dixon was stripped while attempting to maneuver for a game-tying goal and the Hounds (3-6) had their second straight win.
Face-off specialist Adam Rand had an outstanding game in defeat for the Bayhawks, capturing 19 of 26 draws. Rubeor along with attackmen Danny Glading and Drew Westervelt notched three points apiece for Chesapeake, which was playing the first of four straight games on the road. Rubeor has now scored at least one point in 24 consecutive games, the longest active streak on the Bayhawks and among the best in the MLL.
