Waterloo, Iowa-Bruising Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman Tony Turgeon has committed to play college hockey for the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the Black Hawks announced Thursday.

The 20-year-old from Bismarck, North Dakota is spending his first winter in Waterloo. Through six games, Turgeon has accumulated 36 penalty minutes, second in the United States Hockey League. Skating last season for the Bismarck Bobcats of the North American Hockey League, Turgeon scored six goals, with four assists, in 48 regular season games. He is the tenth 2009-2010 Black Hawk committed to a Division I university.

"Tony is the kind of player any coach would want to have on their team," said Waterloo Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "Not only is his physical style of play well suited to the WCHA, but as a coach, when you challenge him, he rises to the occasion."

Turgeon will join former Waterloo defenseman Pasko Skarika on the Maverick's roster. Currently a junior, Skarika played in Waterloo from 2005 to 2007.

More than two-thirds of UNO's current lineup is composed of players with USHL experience. In addition, Head Coach Dean Blais and Associate Head Coach Mike Hastings have both led teams in the league, the Fargo Force and Omaha Lancers respectively.
