Troy Bruins News Release

Battle Creek, Michigan - The Troy Bruins attempted to spoil their second consecutive home opener on the road, but would fall to a 1-1 record with a physical 5-2 loss against the Battle Creek Revolution inside the Revolution Arena in Battle Creek, Michigan Friday night. Troy's Todd McIlrath and Beavercreek's Lee McClure would score the pair of goal of the Bruins. The Bruins now prepare to host in-state rival Queen City Storm inside the historic Hobart Arena on Saturday night at 8pm.

The opening period would begin with the Bruins dominating the tempo, and controlling the puck throughout the Revolution's zone, amassing shots on starting netminder Vado Kinsella turning away the rubber between the pipes and keeping Troy off the scoreboard. The lone short handed goal of the period would come just past the midway mark, at 11:49, allowing Battle Creek to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Revolution came surged after their goal, eventually outshooting the Bruins 13-10 after twenty minutes.

After an intermission talk by Bruins head coach Rick Szabo, it wouldn't take Troy long in the second period to even things up. Former Bowling Green State University standout Todd McIlrath lit the lamp off an assist from returning Bruin Willie Boyle and Kevin Lee just 3:20 in. Troy would continue to surge past the midway mark of the game, forcing more shots on Kinsella. The Revolution would "rev" up their home crowd once again with a rebound goal in front of the crease at 16:59. Physicality would punctuate the final minutes of the second period, yet the Bruins remained disciplined and focused on playing their game. After a pair of periods in the books, both clubs remained tied 1-1 into the intermission, with Troy outshooting the Revolution 17-13.

The third period would be what is talked about in the morning, thanks to a quick goal by returning Bruin Lee McClure at the 5:06 mark to regain the slim one goal lead. As the Revolution continued to apply their tactics of physicality towards the Bruins top players, simple breakdowns in front of Bruins starting netminder Rob Mattison would lead to a trio of Revolution goals to put the game out of reach in the closing minutes. Near the conclusion of regulation, a number of players engaged in fisticuffs, most notably veteran forward McIlrath, who spent last season playing for the Revolution. Shots in the third once again favored the home team, with the Revolution slightly edging the Bruins in the game total tally 36-35, good enough for the 5-2 win in front of their home crowd at the Revolution Arena.

With the decision, the Bruins record now stands at 1-1-0, and they now prepare for their own home opener Saturday night at 8pm when they host in-state rival Queen City Storm inside the historic Hobart Arena. Tickets are on sale now online and will be available at the Hobart Arena box office starting at 6pm Saturday for only $8! Call 985-PUCK or visit TroyBruins.com for more information.
