Troy Bruins News Release
Sharonville, OH - The Troy Bruins professional hockey team opened the 2010-2011 AAHL preseason with a win on the road Wednesday afternoon, defeating in-state rival Queen City Storm 12-4 in a hard fought competition for the remaining roster spots for the upcoming AAHL regular season.
Facing off for the first time in either team's history, the Bruins would open the scoring with a David Lynne goal by crashing the net just four minutes and change into the opening period. After Queen City tied the score off an odd man rush, Troy reclaimed the lead with 1:44 to go in the first, this time scored by former Bowling Green State University NCAA standout Todd McIlrath, before the Bruins capitalized on a chance in front of the Storm net with just :29 left to send the team into the first intermission ahead 3-1.
Both teams would come out flying in the second period, with both Troy and Queen City notching three goals apiece, while returning Bruin and Beavercreek native Lee McClure added his team's fifth goal before engaging in a round of fisticuffs with Storm tough-guy Charles Harvey after taking a nasty slash to the torso. After forty minutes, the Bruins led 6-4 on the scoreboard.
Bruins head coach Rick Szabo would utilize the third period to continue evaluating players in various positions by mixing up the line combinations and positional pairings, while netminder Rob Mattison turned away all Storm shots in the period, keeping the home team from closing the scoring gap. Troy would end up scoring six goals in the final stanza, including a breakaway goal by Troy native Derek Nova to secure the win for Troy.
With the win, the Bruins close out the preseason portion of the schedule, and now prepare to open the regular season on the road against the Lapeer Loggers inside the Polar Palace in Lapeer, Michigan this Friday evening at 7pm. Friday night's game will be televised live on PostTV, found by visiting www.MiamiCountyPost.com, with Bruins broadcaster JT Szabo handling the play-by-play.
Troy Bruins opening night 2010 is set for Saturday, October 30 at 8pm as they host the Madison Ice Muskies inside the historic Hobart Arena.
