Tropics Dominate 10-Time Champion Baltimore Blast to Remain Undefeated; Milwaukee Next
December 22, 2019 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Florida Tropics SC News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. - For the second time this season, the Major Arena Soccer League Florida Tropics blew open a close game with six unanswered goals, defeating the Baltimore Blast 7-2 Saturday night at the RP Funding Center, to remain undefeated in five starts.
Tied 1-1 midway through the second quarter, newcomer Lucio Gonzaga got the first of his two goals on the game to send Florida to intermission with a 2-1 lead.
The offense got cranked in the second half, as Ricardo Carvalho, Gordy Gurson and Lucas Teixeira each tallied in the third to make it 5-1. Gurson and Gonzaga each added their second of the night in the final 15 minutes before Jonatas Melo added a sixth-attacker marker for Baltimore.
But that was all a stingy Tropics defense would allow in a defensive masterpiece which tied a team record for fewest goals allowed in a game. It is the second time this season Florida has held a team to just two goals, and the Tropics now have wins this year over the current MASL champion Milwaukee Wave and the Blast who won the three prior league crowns.
Victor Parreiras opened the scoring for Florida in the first period before Baltimore's Melo tied it in the second.
Brett Petricek, who signed just less than two weeks ago following an injury to starting goalkeep Hugo Silva and visa issues which have kept Rainer Hauss from playing, picked up his second win in as many starts.
Florida extended its team-record winning streak to five games with the triumph, and remain only one of two undefeated teams in the entire MASL.
They will host Milwaukee next Saturday in a 5:05 p.m. kickoff to conclude the current homestand. Tickets are available at fltropics.com, two-hours prior to kickoff at the RP Funding Center box office or by calling 863-240-0101. The game will be broadcast live on WTTA-TV, Great 38 out of Tampa, and online at masl.tv.
