Triple-A All-Star Game Voting Reaches Halfway Mark
June 12, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Voting for the 27th annual Triple-A All-Star Game has reached the midway point as the final day of balloting concludes on Friday, June 27th. Fans have gone out in full force to try and send their favorite players to Durham, North Carolina, on July 16th.
Nick Evans from the Reno Aces is the top overall vote getter among Triple-A players, and leads the designated hitter position for the Pacific Coast League by a wide margin. The 28-year-old had accumulated 11 home runs, 44 RBIs, and a .335 average in 44 games for the Aces, before the Arizona Diamondbacks called him up on May 28th.
The top six outfielders receiving fan votes are a mixture of premier prospects and seasoned veterans. Las Vegas' Andrew Brown, the PCL Player of the Month for May, is the top vote getter in the outfield (second among all PCL positions) followed by Los Angeles Dodgers' No. 1 prospect Joc Pederson representing the Isotopes. The final starting outfield spot is the closest race in the fan voting with El Paso's Jeff Francoeur leading Memphis's Randal Grichuk by less than 30 votes. Another Redbirds' outfielder, Oscar Taveras, as well as Round Rock's power hitter Brad Snyder are also hot on the trail for the final outfield spot. Brown, Grichuk, Taveras, and Snyder are all currently playing in the major leagues.
The El Paso Chihuahuas, who will be represented at the Triple-A All-Star Game for the first time this season, have a chance to send two starters with Adam Moore commanding the lead behind the plate. Moore's .311 batting average is highest among PCL catchers.
The Nashville Sounds' pitching staff, which holds the best ERA (3.31) and most strikeouts (589) in the league, also have the top two starting pitchers on the fan ballot. Jimmy Nelson and Mike Fiers own the top two spots, while Reno's Mike Bolsinger and another Sounds' pitcher Brad Mills take the third and fourth spots. Memphis' David Aardsma and Omaha's Spencer Patton, who have combined for 24 saves for their respective teams, are both on pace to win the fan vote as relievers.
Fan balloting accounts for one-third of the total vote on determining the starting lineups for the All-Star Game. The other two-thirds of the total vote will be decided by members of the media, each club's field manager, coaches, and general manager. The Triple-A All-Star Game will be broadcast live from Durham on Wednesday, July 16 on MLB Network and streamed online at MiLB.TV.
