Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

TROY, NY --- J.J. Matijevic doubled with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning and then scored the game's only run on a Jake Adams two-out bases loaded walk as the Tri-City ValleyCats beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 1-0 in New York-Penn League action Monday night at Bruno Stadium.

Neither team could muster much offense over the first nine innings as the Lake Monsters were held to just one hit, a Lana Akau one-out line drive single in the top of the eighth, and the ValleyCats just three hits before the Matijevic double in 10th. Matijevic advanced to third on a wild pitch by Marc Berube (2-2) and then trotted home when Berube issued a walk, intentional walk and the bases loaded walk to end the game.

Four Tri-City pitchers combined on the one-hit shutout with four walks and 13 strikeouts. Starter Tyler Ivey, who entered game with 13.62 ERA and 24 hits allowed in 11 2/3 innings, did not give up a hit over 4 2/3 innings of work on Monday with just a one-out walk to Logan Farrar in the first and fielding error in the fifth inning.

ValleyCats reliever Carlos Hiraldo, who was knocked around for six runs on six hits over two innings at Vermont on July 25th, tossed three scoreless innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Reggie Johnson (4-0) then struckout the side in the top of the 10th to earn the victory on the ValleyCats walkoff in bottom of inning.

Vermont pitchers were just as dominant over the first nine innings as Wyatt Marks went the first 3 1/3 innings, allowing two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Parker Dunshee then tossed 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief with two walks and four strikeouts to extend his consecutive scoreless streak to 21 innings to start his professional career.

Logan Salow walked the first batter he faced in the seventh inning before retiring the next six, four by strikeout, in two scoreless innings. Berube allowed two hits with the three 10th-inning walks and a strikeout as the four Lake Monster pitchers combined on four-hitter with eight walks and 13 strikeouts.

Monday marked the second time this season that Vermont went to extra-innings in a scoreless game (beat Hudson Valley 1-0 in 15 innings July 7th) and its first road extra-inning game of the season. It was also the Lake Monsters first shutout loss of the season.

The Lake Monsters and ValleyCats will wrap up the three-game series at Tri-City on Tuesday morning starting at 11:00 am. Vermont (22-18) returns home to Centennial Field for a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers (19-18), who are currently 1 1/2 games behind the Lake Monsters for first-place in the Stedler Division.
