Macon Trax News Release

[Macon, Ga.] – The Macon Trax could not overcome a three-goal first period by the Columbus Cottonmouths, dropping their home opener 5-2 in front of a crowd of 3,599 at Macon Centreplex Saturday night. David Deeves led the Trax in scoring with two assists.

Orrin Hergott put Columbus on the board only 12 seconds into the first period. Macon goaltender Mark Cairns made the initial save on Lorne Misita's shot but could not control the rebound, which fell right on the stick of Hergott who wristed the puck low to Cairns' stick side for his second goal of the season.

A mistake in the corner by the Trax put Columbus up 2-0 at the 4:31 mark of the first frame. The puck squirted loose to a wide-open Misita in the slot who beat Cairns for his third goal of the season and second point on the night. Craig Stahl added another for the Cottonmouths at the 9:39 mark, giving them the 3-0 edge.

The Trax got back into the game at 16:46 of the first as Ryan Rivard received a perfect pass from David Deeves at the left goal post for a one-timer past Columbus netminder Chad Rycroft to pull the Trax within two at 3-1 on only their fifth shot of the game.

Casey Handrahan's first professional goal brought the Trax within one at 17:46 of the second period. Handrahan's slap shot from the top of the right wing face-off circle slid in just under the crossbar for a 3-2 score. The Trax also held the Cottonmouths to only one shot on goal in the period.

Columbus put the game out of reach for Macon at 13:36 of the third as Tom McMonagle capitalized on a two-on-two break following a Trax turnover at center ice for a 4-2 game. Ryan Haggarty added one more late in the third for the Cottonmouths for the 5-2 final.

The Trax return to home ice this Tuesday, November 23 to face the Winston-Salem Polar Twins. The game time has been changed to 7:05 p.m. This is the first "DOUBLE COLA DOUBLE TUESDAY." All fans can bring a Double Cola, Ski, or Jumbo soft drink to the Trax office to receive 2-for-1 ticket specials. All beverages inside the Centreplex will be 2-for-1 during the game.
