Edmonton Trappers News Release
Right-hander Christian Parker (1-1) allowed three runs in 5.1 innings of work and belted a three-run home run in the fourth inning of the first game of a doubleheader as the Edmonton Trappers defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 6-4 Friday afternoon at TELUS Field. The Sky Sox battled back to win the second game of the double dip, 5-2. The win by Parker was his first of the season, the home run was the first by a Trapper pitcher this season and the second of his minor league career. Edmonton won three of the four games in the series and won the all-time series from Colorado Springs 97-87 (.527). Ironically the home run by Parker was Edmonton's only longball of the series. The Trappers will begin a four-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes on Saturday night at TELUS Field.
The Trappers took an early lead in the first game, scoring three times in the second inning off Sky Sox starter Brian Tollberg (2-3). Left fielder Julius Matos doubled with two out in the inning, Brandon Watson followed with a walk and Parker reached on an infield hit to load the bases for second baseman Brian Harris, who crushed a Tollberg offering into right-center field for a three-run triple. Colorado Springs third baseman Garrett Atkins doubled with two out in the third inning, scoring Tollberg and Clint Barmes to draw the Sky Sox to within one run of the lead. They tied the game in the third inning on a Choo Freeman double that plated Jorge Piedra. Matos led off the fourth inning for the Trappers with a single, Watson followed with a base hit and Parker broke the tie with his home run to left-center field. Colorado Springs added another run in the seventh inning off closer Pat Mahomes, but it was too little, too late.
The Sky Sox jumped all over Trapper starter Mike Johnson in the second game, scoring once in the first inning and four times in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Barmes led off the game with a single and scored later on a double by Rene Reyes. Travis Driskill led off the third with a base hit and later scored on a two-run single by catcher J.D. Closser that also plated Barmes, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Reyes singled to put runners at the corners and third baseman Andy Tracy followed with a double that scored Closser. A sacrifice fly by Piedra scored Reyes with the final run of the frame. Edmonton scored once in the bottom of the third inning on a single by Matos that scored Harris from second. They added another run in the seventh inning when Watson scampered home on an error by Tracy.
