Indiana Fever News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever has finalized a 15-player roster for its 2013 training camp which begins this weekend under the direction of sixth-year head coach Lin Dunn. Dunn, who guided the Fever to the 2012 WNBA championship, will welcome 10 of 11 players from the championship team. Additions include three free agent signings and a pair of rookie draft picks.
Among the free agents will be local product Shyra Ely-Gash, a former Indiana Miss Basketball from Ben Davis High School. She is a six-year WNBA veteran who played with the club in 2011 but sustained a left ACL injury prior to training camp in 2012. A free agent who will not be in camp is Laura Harper whom the Fever signed in February. She was injured overseas and has notified the team of her intention to retire.
Top draft pick Layshia Clarendon will debut with the Fever when she reports from her home in San Bernardino, Calif. She will be joined by second-round selection Jasmine Hassell. Third-round pick Jennifer George recently underwent shoulder surgery and will not report. The Fever retains her rights and she is expected to report to camp in 2014.
The Fever, which has advanced to the WNBA Playoffs in eight straight seasons with five trips to the conference finals and a pair of appearances in the WNBA Finals, opens camp with the rest of the WNBA as the league prepares for its 17th season. The Fever will stage its first practice on Sunday or Monday, pending Indiana Pacers results in the NBA Playoffs.
The team travels for an exhibition opener at San Antonio on Saturday, May 11. The Silver Stars visit Bankers Life Fieldhouse for a preseason finale between the two clubs on Wednesday, May 15 at Noon. The preseason home date is billed as Education Day featuring Choices for Champions. A Choices for Champions educational program begins at 9:45 a.m.
The roster will be trimmed to 11 by May 23, prior to the Fever opening its 14th season at San Antonio on May 24. One week later, the Fever hosts its 2013 home opener on Friday, May 31 (7:00 p.m.) against Atlanta. The evening will feature a pregame Championship Celebration and Ring Ceremony presented by Herff Jones that includes the raising of the team's 2012 WNBA championship banner.
